g'day Corrie, it is possible to create an image this way, I've done this deliberately
colour film also has light sensitive silver halides that are initially developed just like mono film, the image formed by this chemical reaction is then changed to become colour dyes in normal colour developing chemistry, if developed in mono chemistry the change to colour does not occur
the resultant negatives are very thin and extremely low in contrast, the orange film base also interefers with the normal activity of exposing photographic paper
give it a try, it's only a roll of film and a little chemistry

Thanks Ray! So would i develope the film (say 400iso..) for the same time as a b&w ISO400? Or do the chemical times change....

Hi Corrie,
I experimented with a few rolls of color film in b&w chemicals with some interesting results. I found a site that gave times and temps for developing C-41 and if I remember correctly, the temp was around 100 degrees, as opposed to the typical 68 degrees for the b&w. I can't remember what the time difference was, if any, but I do recall using warmer developer and leaving it in a bit longer. The film I used was expired Solaris 200.
But it can't hurt to experiment! Even if you don't end up with something suitable for printing, there's always Photoshop! ;-) I posted 2 of the photos in my portfolio here after they were scanned & Photoshopped a little. They're the ones titled Rocking Horse & Misery if you care to take a peek.
