Q. Cleaning fingerprints

How does one safely clean fingerprints off slides and negatives, from both sides?

John,

Fingerprints are oil based so water will do little. Use a film cleaner like PEC-12 which you can buy in little packets with lintless towlettes.

You can also use 1.1.1 Trichloroethane which is the active incredient in old film cleaners. This is now a restricted chemical due to the ozone issue but it is still available in some older film cleaners. (the ones that work)

As always be very careful not to apply too much pressure to the film or you may scratch the emulsion.

For non oil based crud on the film you can do a rewash if the film is not too old. Then either re-stabilize if color or re-photoflo is black and white.
