I have a different camera but for the RB67 I have been strongly discouraged from from cleaning the mirror as they say it is very fragile.

I may be wrong...but i think touching the mirror is the biggest no-no when it comes to cleaning your camera. If you take it to a camera shop though they have special tools to clean it without even touching it-i'd do that before going near it myself.
(i took mine in and they blew cleaned it with an air gun type of thing-high pressure air-worked nicely.)

You have a fine camera. DO NOT TRY CLEANING MIRROR. You might get lucky, but the potential for a costly repair. Send off for professional cleaning and repair. Chuck

I have always thought that mirrors in cameras are top - silvered. Therefore, any material other than air will guarantee a scratch.

Actually, I don't think the mirror itself carries any contacts, the light is normally metered in the prism, after it has been reflected from the mirror. If the mirror looses reflectivity or becomes hazy, not only will you not see a sharp picture through the finder, but the light meter might be fooled. If you are not using a metered prism on the SQ-A, the worst that will happen is you will not see the image properly on the focusing screen (which is pretty bad), but the picture will not be affected. Remember, the mirror flips out of the way before the film gets exposed. It's only there for you to view.
