  Q. 6X6 Hasselblad & Rollis Vs 6X7 Mamiya.

Asked by Thalmees Salsa    (K=125) on 7/18/2003
Is realy the 6X6 Hasselblad & Rollis better than the 6X7 Mamiya in getting larger prints?

... depends on the user

All of these cameras are used by professional commercial photographers and artists who obtain excellent results. It's really a question of your working style and what you feel comfortable with and whether you prefer square or rectangular format. The lenses being made today for the Mamiya 7 system and RZ are outstanding and don't represent any compromise in comparison with Zeiss.

I have used 3 medium format cameras - Hasselblad , Mamiya 7 and Contax 645 and they all have advantages and disadvantages--depends on the type of photography you want to do. The Mamiya is very light and easy to hold. It is a rangefinder, which takes a bit to get used to but it is really very intuitive. The lenses are great and the 6x7 format wonderful. Hasselblad is obviously excellent with great lenses. It is heavy and is usually used with a waist level viewfinder which some people like better than others. I currently use a contax 645 which is the smallest medium format negative. I like the camera for handheld shooting in the street because it is easy to hold, has an autofocus feature that can be used in manual mode with the right thumb, is relatively light (but heavier than the Mamiya) and very intuitive for quick image capture. The lenses are also excellent. However, it is a compromise because of the smaller neagive size and would probably not be the best choice if you did all your work with a tripod. Hope this helps but after all it is a personal decision - it is best to try them out if you can before purchase.

Great question. I think the answer is with the user and more specifically his/her experience in photography.
