It is without a doubt the most overused expression on the web. It has the same effect on me as ipecac syrup. It is the tritest piece of shit term going and has absolutely no place in this phorum because every response here is an opinion. You use this abbreviation and I peg you as a softhead IHOP(International House of Pancakes). Whoever is responsible for coining that boil of an acronym needs to have real violence placed all about their neck and shoulders.(FTW)

Speaking for himself, Tribby is exactly right. No one would ever accuse him of having a humble opinion.

I totally agree with Trib. But I've been a sinner on that. I promise I won't use it further...
But then, let's get rid of BTW, FWIW and :-) also (H@H@ is better but only as a response), they're just as irritating. :-) is especially used by people who want to indicate that something they wrote was meant as a joke and NOT as an OFFENSE! and thus just as much an excuse for an opinion as IMHO.
By the way, I think IMHO comes from the Compuserve Forum(s), at least it's being bred there.

We need acronyms like OOC for "out of context" and DPWIMM "don't put words in my mouth" or SFYS "speak for your self" and something for "that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard" and "I like you but you're an idiot" (put smiley face HERE!!!)...t

I guess I've become immune to acronym-phobia. I work for ATSC who is contracted to NASA at the WSTF (near WSMR and HAFB). Most of what we do is outlined in WJIs, WSIs, WSPs, TPSs, and occasionally OCPs. Today I had to sit through a TRR and an SSA because my IR illuminated 2,000,000 FPS UHS framing camera supports the .50 cal. HVI TP. (I'm still waiting for six rolls of 16 mm film [VNF-1] to come back from NAVAIRWARCENWPNDIV so I can finalize the HOVI data from the HEBF. There's an FY99 funding issue, so I sent an ANVO and a BPR to F&P!)
It's a wonder that we government pukes can still speak English. After reading the posts above, I vow to use real words whenever possible. (Except for "ASA.")

Moderator's note: May I remind participants that one rule of this forum is:
You are not to make personal slurs, flames, insults, abusive or offensive remarks.
I have become lax about enforcing this rule, because I have better things to do with my time, but please observe it in future.

The philosophy behind it Richard is to add some of the gratuitous amenities and courtesies of written communication to the impromptu belching, top of the head rant and bluster of some webspeak. Not unlike such similar inanities as "sincerely," "respectfully," "I respectfully disagree" which have become part of western speechpatter. Means nothing per se, but communicates a tone of lets say deferential gentility. And smilacons are like throat clearings mostly, but I can accept them as personal touches that convey some emotional content in some context. The evolution of webtalk, I guess I am saying.

IMHO? This and other commonly used acronyms come from the venerable unix world where such things were considered 'cool' and 'in'. Admittedly not IOTETMCO (Intuitively Obvious To Even The Most Casual Observer) but a much better pedigree than having originated from Compuserve!
