Photography Forum: Philosophy Of Photography Forum:
  Q. Is it the Photo Name?
Neil Niamh White
Asked by Neil Niamh White    (K=9165) on 9/20/2004
I've been with Usefilm for a little while now, but this is my first foray into the forums!

I've been posting my pics because:

1. I like them and want to see if others do
or
2. I'm just experimenting
or
3. I want some help with ways to improve (I don't mind negative comments as well as the positive)

I've been reviewing my posted photos and one of them stands out a mile in terms of views (156 at time of writing) but no comments!

So what is it likely to be about that photo that makes people look further than the thumbnail but not to comment. Most of my others vary between around 5 and 35 views so I really don't understand this one.

I thought I had a reasonable handle on why things happen but this is really bugging me.

Any ideas?

Neil (Confused)

I'll venture a guess as to why. Using myself as an example. I seldom view any topics except what interests me (sports, fashion, portraits & oeople). As I look through these groups, I spot something that catches my eye as a thumbnail. I then click it to see it larger. Probably half of the time, I'll be even more intriqued or impressed and leave comments, often questions as to how something was done or lighted. I look at it from the view that something about it caught someone's eye as a small picture so the fact that they clicked for larger view means it is above the norm.

I frequently look at 50 plus a day. Unfortunately, time prohibits me from commenting on all. I usually try to extend the courtesy of commenting on photos by those who have commented on my work but honestly I don't do so as frequently as I should. I would not be too concerned about lack of comments, often folks just look, like it, don't have any specific suggestions for bettering it and so they move on. Again, I consider the # of views as a good thing, even if there are little or no comments made.

Of course there can be a combination of posibilities.. Maybe it drew attention between some b&w shots, or simply because it was recognisable. Then there's the fact that mushrooms are a popular subject, just did a series myself, and in europe it's the time of the year.

And of course there's still the possibility of a bug. Had it some time ago that an image jumpt from some 20 views straight to some 230. Never happend since, but still..

Pretty curious - maybe there mushrooms color were mistaken for skin color ;-)

Stefan,

Hmmm... I did wonder if there might be something like that but if they have skin tones in mind...what on earth do they think the shapes might be! I have noticed that other skin tone images do seem to attract a lot of views. :)

And thanks for your comments on some of my images. I've been looking at some more of yours and I can see there are some common themes to what attracts your eye compared to my own.

Hi Neil:
Your photos are very good-like mine no great ONES to remember in history.. bUT you should get comments. I once posted a partial nude on another site-got 1500 Views, one comment. So you and I both "may" be the vistim of a group of "just viewers", not real photographers. Some times "viewers" are just after the nudes and bizzare. I have noticed that the critiquers that regularly comment on my work are real good photographers. Check out Mara Barres At any rate I have not taken or posted any, even semi nudes in a long, long Time.
Best Wishes Chuck

Neil,

Yes, I've too observed that the number of views does not always correspond to the number of comments that a photograph receives. While the shapes and tones in your photograph resemble (or suggest) exposed male organ, an observation (v/s just glancing) of the thumbnail quicky corrects any assumptions on part of the viewer.

I can only speculate the reasons behind this discrepancy in numbers:
1) if you were or your photo was featured in some manner on the usefilm home page, then it would get a lot of views. I know, I almost always view the thumnails featured on the homepage (sometimes out of sheer habit) but do not necessarily comment on each.
2) from the 30 or so thumbnails in a page, your thumbnail would standout because of the skin tones and some suggestive shapes, resulting in more views. Perhaps some people are interested only in viewing adult images and if your thumnail even suggests such, it gets more views.

Hi Nitish,

I still don't get this one. The number of hitson that image

http://www.usefilm.com/image/529688.html

is still increasing and is at 465! Which is way more than the only image I have had on the front page of 234 for

http://www.usefilm.com/image/581238.html

I also have another "flesh" coloured Fungi image at http://www.usefilm.com/image/593179.html with the name "Buns" which I might have expected to suffer in a similar way but its only at 48.

Just doesn't make sense to me unless someone has put a link to that image from another web site but don'tknow how I'd track that down.

Neil

A google search of the URL of your image turned up this site - apiencompass.com. I did not see any image there though.

I have also wondered the same thing! LOL I have ONE shot in my portfolio with over 400 views, and I have never had a photo on the front page. It DOES have comments under it, but it is just surprising to me that the one photo has SO MANY more views than all my others!
