  Q.  Using Photoshop to restore?? Is it Ethical??

Asked by Chuck Freeman    (K=13616) on 4/22/2006
I have a lot of Old photos. Many I can attribute to my favorite Aunt.
However, many I can not attribute to photographer. But I still restore them and post some of them? I was told in an email that this is unethical. My latest post is over 75 yrs of age.
Right or Wrong?????

With an image like that, it is obvious that you did not take it. I don't think it is really an issue about ethics as you are not claiming you did. If your intent on posting it was to show a before and after of your retouching and restoration then I would think that is fine. Other then that, Usefilm is really meant as a place to show off your own photographs and gather critiques on them, not a general photo storage site or on-line family album site. So in that regard it may not be appropriate to post them. Then again, on the other hand, if it is your goal to discuss the style of photography and techniques used in the old image, nothing wrong with that either.

I truly enjoy looking at old photos like this. There is something about them missing from todays images that are so disposable and easily forgotten. So I would say have fun and post some more if you have them.

Thanks Phil:
I have always given credit to photographers IF I KNOW he/she is. is.
My Aunt, now 83, was a great amateur photographer. She gave me most of her photos. Admitedly most were of her family. But she also took scenes.
Thanks again.

The end of the line.

I personally think you have to RESPECT the photographer who took the images before. And if you find more info about him/her, I think would be much better to mention it.

I will always give credit to an unknown photographer if possible.
Hope others will also.

This picture is not 75 years old yet, but it needs some patching up.

I'll ask my copy of photoshop if it's ethical to do so :)
