  Q. Portaits!!

Asked by Jeff Green    (K=154) on 11/3/2005
Hey, I was asked to do some portraits for an upcomming theater production at my university.
I was wondering how I shoudld approach them. They wanted a traditional setup with heavy side lighting and black background and they will be wearing black shirts.

I have a Nikon N80 with a 28-100 and 70-300 ... and a Vivitar 285 HV with a peanut slave (must use TTL to get it off camera)

Furthermore, I will be shooting in real black and white film

what kind of film?
What kind of lighting setup?
How far away should the background be?
Should i take the flash off camera or use it on the hotshoe?

Natural Light is a little iffy because there are a lot to do and getting an even amount for all of them will be too difficult to co-ordinate.

thanks

Hey Jeff, what kind of lighting equipment do you already own?

Are you going to rent or purchase the other required equipment?

You will need at least two studio strobes, two umbrellas, possibly a softbox, stands for all, sync cords, a quality tripod, battery packs, and a backdrop. Getting by on this assigment with just an external flash will not be too possible.

When I recently assisted a photographer with a lengthy shoot at a neurohealth center, for the portraits he had one strobe/umbrella to the slight right of the subject, a strobe w/ a softbox to the left, and his flash on camera as well down the middle (they wanted straight lighting, nothing dramatic). In addition, he also had a strobe setup on the ground behind the subject to illuminate the backdrop.

I'm sure that if you are going to rent/purchase this equipment, that the sales rep will be able to guide you to a certain degree through what you need for this particular setup.
