  Q. K14 Slide Processing: Kodachrome Film

Asked by Chuck Freeman    (K=13616) on 9/20/2005
How many persons in our great audience knew that KODAK recently shut down it's final prepaid processing lab in Fairlawn , New Jersey? Has anyone noticed that prepaid Slide Processing By "kodak" ( From B&H and Adorama) has gone from 4.59 as recently as last spring to over 8.00 at this time.
The reason is all Kodachrome slide film go to a lab in Kansas ( once a very small mostly amateur) called Dwaynes Photo. And guess what-Kodak if you are willing to send your Kodachrome film to the , will send it on to0 DWAYNE'S PHOTO, WHERE IT WILL BE PROCESSED AND MOUNTED BY DWAYNE'S in Kodak's Slide holders/
mounts. Also, Your friend and Mine- WALMART sends all their slide film processing orders to Dwaynes located in Kansas. So there is only one lab that processese A great Film KODACHROME. Shame on Kodak for their obvious attempt to slowly but surely abandon traditional film shooters.

Please do not think I am down on DWAYNES , I have done business back in 1990's and found them nice and efficient for most part.
Just for your info KODAKS TOLL FREE NUMBER IS 1-800-242-2424.

You were lucky to have a lab close by.
Outside the USA there are only 3 labs for the entire world, one each in Europe, Asia, and I think Australia.

Would Kodak have abandoned processing if it were still profitable? I think not.

I don't know why you're blaming Kodak for bowing to market pressure, but you're clearly assigning fault to the wrong entity.

Jeroen Wenting  Donor  (K=25317) - Comment Date 9/22/2005
Correct. K14 processing has been on the decline for almost a decade now, ever since K25 was removed from production.
It's less to do with Kodak "wanting to abandon film shooters" as with film shooters abandoning Kodak for the vastly superior products created by Fuji.

Yes, Deb, I do think that Kodak will eventually abandon film photography. And I do Blame them for soooo many bad business decisions. Check out article in READERS DIGEST about woes of Kodak's future. Thanks for your comment.

Sure Kodak has made some poor business decisions, all companies have.
The fact that they're still around indicates though that the good decisions they made more than made up for the poor ones.

Kodak should for example probably have abandoned K14 for the industry standard E6 15 years ago, instead of soldiering on all alone (which was by their own design btw, another bad decision in not allowing others to use K14 technology).

Their decision to abandon development on all consumer film products is another one I have some doubts about as to the economic validity.
For myself I do not see film as a dead end at all, though it might get more specialised.
But then I'm also oldfashioned enough to still have an old record player and I do browse the racks of vinyl at the music store from time to time.

Sounds like me.. I have about 300 Albums and about only 7 Cd's. The reason I am so sold on Kodachrome is for it's longetivity. See Smithsonian Feb 2005 for view of Kodachrome slides taken over 60 years ago. I have Ektachrome Slides, Fujichrome slides and Kodachrome slides. All are fading except Kodachrome. I shot my first Kodachromes in 1969, and they still look like new.
