  Q. How I Made a $24 Light Tent

Asked by [[dead account]]    (K=6692) on 7/10/2005
Here's my recipe in case anyone is interested...

1. I bought a PVC pipe based laundry sorter from a hardware store for $19 (see image below).

2. I put it together as normal, but I left off the wheels. This gave me a lightweight frame.

3. I took a 2 yard piece of white polyester fabric from a fabric store ($4.00) and attached it to the frame on the of 4 the 6 sides using the 4 attached clips included in the frame box. I need to get some more clips from the hardware store, but clear tape is doing the trick for now.

Obviously there is an opening in the front where I can poke the camera through and there is no fabric on the bottom.

4. I set the whole thing on top of a table and will be setting the objects to be photographed on a still to be determined bottom inside the tent.

4. I have a pro light on a telescoping tripod that I set above and beyond the light tent. While this light is really strong, the fabric does a lovely job diffusing the light.

5. I have 2 smaller telescoping halogen lights that I will shoot through the sides for more pinpoint lighting control.

6. I plan put my desktop and monitor outside of the box and to plug my 2 cameras into the computer so I can have live previews of what images will look like.

I plan to start shooting with this rig when I get more free time and I'll post samples of what they look like as well as a photo of my final setup.

Hope this is helpful...

It's me again (using my photography only donor account) with one of my first samples from the light tent.

Here's a link to the image since I would only be allowed to upload a smaller image here on the board.

That sounds great!
I had a go at making one with a dowling frame covered in a light white material - but it didn't fold away which was annoying, and the cat thought it was for him - and covered it in muddy paws and fur - rendering it useless!
So it's gone from a light tent to a cat bed!
However, you've inspired me to have another go - especially as I do so many photos for my mums eBay!

Thanks a lot for the idea, I will definitely try something like this out.
