  Q. Man-Exposure Dogs with Spot-meter

Asked by Kurt Pas    (K=2267) on 3/19/2005
Hi,

In the near future I?ll travel to Switzerland with my wife and two Great Danes.

I like to shoot a lot of photographs of our dogs. If i wane use my camera build in spot-meter and set the camera to manual exposure.

How do I have to compensate the meter readings to bring out their expression and fur.

One dog has a black mask and yellow/black fur. The other has a steal blue/grey fur.

Any tips for exposure or general dog-photography are highly appreciated.

Thanks
Kurt P

Kurt, Should we assume you wil be shooting in the snow.

Are you using film or digital? If you are using film I would suggest a good color print film such as Kodak Porta or another pro print film.

If in the snow and it is a bright day you may want to spot meter the snow, compansate +1 or 2 stops. Use a fill flash to expose the dogs.

Get a grey card and learn how to use it.

You can spot meter the dogs but if it is in the snow on a bright day the snow will over expose while the dogs are correctly exposed.

Use a circular polorizing filter.

Just a few suggestions... It is something best learned with experiance.

Thanks Pat,

I?ll be using Portra 160 with a Nikon F75. I'll be shooting in snow, but also in the valleys.

I'll Experiment with the grey card and fill in flash.
