  Q. Choice of tripods
S.D Holmes
Asked by S.D Holmes    (K=7156) on 11/16/2004
Hey guys - can anyone out there recommend a good tripod for outdoor use with a 80-200 lens? they showed me a slik dx400 over here but it was too heavy to be carrying around.I like the velbon sherpa pro but they're really expensive and wondered if there was anything out there on similar lines. The gitzo explorer looks good as well but no sure it can handle the haevy lens.

Well, i am not a guy; however , you may want to look at the carbon gitzo tripod. they are not cheap, but are very light, mine is about 2 lbs and holds that length lens with a 2.8 easily.

I'm using a Manfrotto model. Can't think of the exact nomenclature but it's not terribly important because the damn thing weighs a ton! With my tripod, EOS 3 and 300mm f4 I feel like I'm a "pig gunner" again!

If you've got the funds, definitely go carbon-fiber! I'd also think about the joy-stick style head. I just got one and it's just too easy! Squeeze the handle, position the camera, let go of the handle. Bingo...I love it!

Stu,

I'm using a Manfrotto 3021B Pro and love it. I was using the Manfrotto Carbon Fiber and really didn't like it for landscapes and macro's. If I was going to be trekking for more than 5 miles or so then I would probably use it. It just doesn't sit the way I would like it to and seems to have a bit more vibration when you get into a longer lens.

The thing I have found out to be very important is the type of head you get. Make sure you get a big strong sturdy one.

Hope this helps. Hopefully I will get caught up on some comments here shortly.. Benn busy in the restaurant.

Jim

Cheers Jim!! I had a look at that model and it looks realy nice - good price and excellent reviews all round. Only roblem is the uk on-line distributor i use doesn't stock that model :( and local retailers are useless - one actually tried to flog me a model that he himself told me he'd had in the store for 8 years - talk about crap sales pitchThanks though for the info and i'll keep looking!!btw when we having a gettogether at your restaurant??? ;)

Will second James suggestion about the "joy stick " head. I have several and love them, quick easy and strong. I am using a Nikon 80-200 2.8 lens on one of them and it works very well ; some of you may know this lens is heavy and even in vertical mode it is stable.

Hi Ann,
Read your post, noticed you have a Gitzo CF weighing 2 lbs.
Trying to find out info on Gitzo G1155T and RRS BH25 Pro head and courious which set-up you have and your user experences; max weight able to hold, wind, etc.
Thanks

am using a gitzo 1228 with a bogen head 3265

this set up hold an 80-200 2.8 lens in vertical mode with no problems.

vertical puts a lot of stress on the head but this set up does fine.

as too the ma weight, check the specs on gitzo site it should be helpful with that regard.

it does a hook on the center post that is used for adding weight. I tend to put what ever film bag i am carrying there, just for a place to put it rather than to make the tripod stable.

i have been very happy with the size and weight; however, it was expensive but it certainly is much easy to haul about all day , which is the payoff (for me)

regards,
ann
