  Q. posing family with baby twins?

Asked by David Cohen    (K=1759) on 9/24/2004
I need to take a family portrait of a husband and wife and their two-month-old twins, any tips on how to pose them?

Hmmmm. Interesting dilemma. Here's what I would try.
1.I would use either a white or black backdrop. Place the twins in some sort of seats with the same color material over the seats. Mom/Dad from behind wearing same color (black or white to fade all except faces into the background) looking from behind downward toward the twins. Also try same sort of idea except with the mom/dad to the side with non background colored tops and dad with arm around mom looking at the twins.
2. Mom sitting, holding each twin in one arm (kinda facing one another). Dad standing behind with hands resting on her shoulders.
3. Mom and Dad standing facing one another. Arms extending staight out at the elbows. Each holds a baby with the baby's heads nearly touching. This works well with dark background with mom/dad in dark clothing as well.
4. Mom and dad sitting side by side with each holding a child both angled inward facing one another.

Are these making any sense? Hope that they help.

I had to photograph a similar family last year. What i did was place the mother and father back to back, seated on the floor.(white or black back drop from floor to ceiling). then i placed the children propped up between/infront of them.(we used special baby propping pillows....kind of like a nursing pillow)coverd with the same backdrop. It was beatiful. Then we left the parents in the same position and had each one hold a twin up level with their own face and did a close up of just faces and shoulders. One more quick idea is to have the father sit on the ground with his legs parted so that his wife can sit between his legs. (he may have to be slightly elevated). then she can hold a baby in each arm and he can wrap his arms around the whole family...just an idea.
I hope it goes well for you!

Thanks for your answers... I just went in guns blazing and I hope they will be happy I will post some of the better shots once the film comes back.

They were more interested if the family being together and not perticually what the twins looked like....one twin slept thru the whole shoot.

Thanks a lot for all the help.
