  Q. Sekonic L-308B II Flashmate Light Meter - Opinion

Asked by Elangovan S    (K=10675) on 7/31/2004
Does anyone use this meter? Any opinion about this one...
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=46885&is=REG

I dont want to do any more guessing when I m working indoor... At the sametime, I dont want to put too much of money into it. I wanna meter that can do the job, dont wanna anything fancy... Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Elangs.

I had one of these for a long time and used it as a backup to my minolta meter. both were stolen some time ago. now i have a sekonic L-358, which i much prefer over the 308 in function and convenience for my style of shooting but i sure miss the battery life and the more common battery of the 308. the 308 is small and light and quite accurate. the 358 is larger, heavier but more flexible in most cases. you can move the sensor around on the 358 so it is facing the right direction and it has a nice light balance feature so you can do lighting ratios or figure out how much of an exposure is ambient light and how much is flash. since i use battery powered slave flashes outdoors a lot, this was an important feature to me. if the main reason you want the 308 is for indoors/studio application of flash, and when using it outdoors you just use it as an incident ambient meter, then the 308 is all you will ever need.

Yes, Elan, excellent question. Using the 308, what is the difference between incident and reflected metering? For each of those metering modes, where do I hold the meter?
Thanks,
Glen

The 308 is a great, simple little meter - it was the meter supplied to the students on a workshop I used to teach and it performed very well. Charles has summed up the capabilities very well.

Most of the time we used it in incident mode - I think that's the best technique for nearly all situations.

I owned one of these and can stand by its precision, amazing battery life, size, well, it's a photometer I'm planning to buy again sometime, when I'm more on studio work.
Its measurements were always sharp on with a friend's Minolta IV F at the time, although it costs less. Hard to beat on price x value.

Regards,

Jose Azevedo
