  Q. Fill Flash on Overcast Days

Asked by Riann Henkel    (K=0) on 5/28/2004
I have a wedding next weekend (outdoors, about noon) and the forecast is calling for slightly overcast conditions, which is great as far as squinting and shadows goes. Can someone tell me if I still need to be using my fill flash for every picture even if there are no shadows on the bride/groom's faces?

I'd probably use some fill flash, but not much. Maybe 2 or 3 stops under ambient light readings.

The catchlight is what you want from fill flash, so yes.

When ambient light is soft, your flash may again cause sharp shadows, so better have a diffuser at hand, which will soften the flash. Cheers

Hi Riann ...... As to your question on " fill light" at a overcast wedding. Here's my advice : If it's a lightly overcast day ... this is good. What i want you to do is .. read the light on the faces(cheeks) .. and do what the meter says. If your using 1oo speed film .. it will be around a 60sec.@f.4if it does not rain .. you will have a perfect day. ...If it gets darker ... a fill will help .. but will look like night photos...... Don't be unsure because of overcast ...... this is good. really. If you have to get in close and it's heavy overcast ... drop a handkerchief over the flash head. .. it will reduce the intense light......... Also .. once you read the faces and the overcast doesn't change ..... just use that setting .. till it does.... If i can help you more : write to me at ZACKFOX@AOL.COM.

~~~~~~~~~~~ Regards ...... Bill
I'd use a flash. See the difference (attached: photo without The Flash, photo with The Flash)
