  Q. Tripod advice

Asked by Amit Mishra    (K=81) on 4/21/2004
Planning to buy a tripod. Sugggestion from u guys are appreciated. Tripod should be sturdy to hold Medium Format cameras well. Please advice on Brand and Model No and do advice on the Head as well, since that's the most confusing part.

Amit,
I have a bogen 3021BNPro with 486CR?? head. I think the whole system hold 13.2. lbs. I'm not sure what kinda of medium format system you are putting on there, but that might do you. Also the tripod is a little heavy (if you are in a studio that won't matter). Hope that helps.

I have a Manfrotto 055Pro with a 141RC head, it's quite sturdy and versatile and holds 6kg.

Manfrotto 055Pro is magnificent, but go for the 029 or 329 head which are larger and more sturdy than the 141.
Or go for a medium sized ballhead like the 488RC0 or the Markins M10.

The Bogen/Manfrotto suggestions are good. I ended up with the (probably) most popular tripod in the world. The Bogen 3021, which was also sort-of suggested by Chris.

The differences between the two are his is black (designated by the "B") and it's the "pro" model, which means you can take the center column out and use it sideways, as a boom.

If those two things don't matter to you, the regular one is a little cheaper.

The head I use is the new trigger grip head, used horizontally so it's not any taller than a regular ball head. Heads are a personal decision, it really depends on what you're photographing.

For example my ball head doesn't have a separate panning base, which would be very welcome if I shot landscapes or races (which I don't). A three way head would be better if I shot products or still lifes. I do shoot products from time to time but not often enough to get another tripod or head.

I decided on a trigger head that I could use with my left hand as my right hand has been injured and I can't grip very hard or for a long time. I also shoot portraits, and the fast, one-handed action of the trigger head is very important, especially with little kids.

I'd try some out in a store and see what you like.

And yet another satisfied Manfrotto/Bogen user. I also use the 055Pro tripod but I have the older 3265 hand grip head. I don't know how much weight it is capable of but the tension is adjustable and the speed/ease of use is outstanding.
