  Q. HELP!

Asked by Danielle Slate    (K=25) on 1/15/2009
Okay... So I use digital normally.... But I am trying to Learn as much as possible! So I am taking Film Photo 1.
Well I am so confused on everything and it's only day 1.... I need to get a film developing tank and contrast filters (small box) I have no idea what a developing tank is and the filters are all different colors of pink.
My questions are.... 1. What is a film developing tank for? 2. Are contrast filters normally all pink shades?

Didn't the insturctor show you the equipment you will need to purchase?

The film developing tank, is just that, it is a light tight container . You load the film onto reels made for the tank and place then in the tank (all in the dark) so that the processing of the film can take place in a lite room with the proper chemistry.
You can purchase several types. THere are plasic tanks and reels, that may people like as they tend to be easier to load. Then the other option would be stainless steel reels and tanks, however, many find the loading of the film to be much more challenging.

stainless steel takes less chemistry.

YOu will need to take a roll of practice film and practice loading the film on the reels ; first watching and then with your eyes closed or hands under a table, etc.

The filters are contrast filters for printing. Not all are pink. they range from light yellow, to dark magenta. When you start printing in the darkroom you will be using these to control the contrast of the print. Your insturctor should explain all this to you.

Just take a deep breath and relax. there is no way any of this is going to make sense on the first day or even the second. It takes time to learn to print, just as the learning curve with your digital work took time so does using film.

Thank you so much!!!! The teacher is kinda rude... She didn't explain anything or show us examples at all.... She pretty much wanted to get the lesson done and out the door... My class is supposed to be 5hrs.... She cut the first day down to an hr and a half. SOOOOO... But thank you so much
