  Q. market value for digi files

Asked by Kathleen Royles    (K=451) on 3/21/2007
I need some imput on what people generally charge clients for use of digi files on websites and in trade magazines. I am presently charging $45.per file. I retain production rights and must be acknowledged as the maker in publications. Does this sound right to you?

All depends on the size of the publication (number of copies to be printed, for a website number of expected visitors), size of the image in the publication, location of the image in the publication, and the actual image itself.

A stock image they could just get from Corbis for example might be worth no more than $10 or so, a rare image of an important event printed on the frontpage of a national newspaper in full colour should bring you thousands.

Contact your local pro photographers' association, they should have pricelists.
That doesn't mean you have to stick to those, but it gives an indication of what the competition is charging and thus what publications are used to paying.
