Hi all,
I have asked this before, but allas, I lost the response i received. I'm sure this will be of help not just to me, but others on this site too. So, can anyone and everyone let me know of any photo competitions that are going on, plus any links and details, and also whether my shots in my portfolio come up to scratch? ALL of you help will be MOST appreciated. Plus any tips on how I can better sell my work online or off. I have my own website which I am still filling up, so you are welcome to have a gander there too. It's www.flippingfabfotos.com Ty for taking time out to read this.

TY Partha,
I shall check it out, is it on the Official NIKON site? I'm also presuming that one does NOT need to have to use just a NIKON product to enter?

Be careful, alot of contests are scams, and by entering you are giving them free rights to publish your photo without compensation, even if you're not a winner. Sometimes, you way unwittingly sign away your copyright. No prize is worth it, check the fine print. (I'm pretty sure a Nikon sponsored contest would be legit.)

Hi Ian,
The Nikon contest is legit;see: http://nikonimaging.com/global/activity/npci/npci2006-2007/index.htm
Another few legit international contests are:
http://www.photoawards.com/ http://www.thespiderawards.com/ http://www.thecolorawards.com/ http://www.nhm.ac.uk/wildphoto/ http://www.tpoty.com/pages/tpoty_frames.html
Before you enter a competition make sure you read the rules carefully. Some competitions require (rather stiff) entry fees, and I wouldn't consider entering a competition where you have to hand over the copyrights to your photos - usage rights is something different, but make sure you will always retain the copyrights over the photos you submit.
Also, spending a bit of time browsing the previous winner galleries is worth your while, it'll show you which type of photos are favoured by the judges.
Good luck!
Cheers,
Hugo

OMG!!!! Hugo, Have you checked out the Nikon Contest?
Can't believe that one of the tow categories is "Heart of The Image"! What with me creating all of these "Heart" artworks in my portfoilio. WOW! Can't believe the coincidence. I don't think they are accepting entries until 1st Sept, so gives me time to select...or create the best two to submit. :-) :-)
Which two of my images would you guys enter if it was you? As we are all photographically minded, you can be my Jury in this decision.

Hi Ian,
Yeah, I've checked out the Nikon Contest, but don't let the theme deceive you. I don't think the Heart of the Image is meant literally, but more as metaphore. I would interpret it as the WOW! Factor, a touching, emotive photo with a soul, if you catch my drift.
I guess it can't hurt to enter one or more of your heart images, as they're not only good, but also very creative, and highly original, IMHO. Looking at the previous winners, (think they had a similar theme last time, too) I wouldn't be surprised if they would stand a chance, but then again, I wouldn't bet on it either.
I find it very difficult to make a pick; it's a wild guess, and a very subjective guess at that. I would suggest to follow your instinct. You clearly have a very creative mind; and I would just rely on that.
If I had to pick, I think I would choose something similar to http://www.usefilm.com/image/1102243.html, but with a more exaggerated perspective; probably a reshoot with a 12mm lens, if you see what I mean.
The thing I usually do is to go into extremes, try and take the common theme out of its usual perspective whilst keeping it "realistic" - not too tricked. Nikon does allow tricked images, though.
Hope this helps. I realise its not a direct answer to your question, but more of a subjective description of how I would go about it.
Cheers,
Hugo
