  Q. Street portraits

Asked by Manuel Cervera    (K=25) on 1/26/2006
I´m starting in photography. My main interest is portrait but, at the moment, I haven´t made photos out of family circle.
I have seen a lot of photography, because I have interest in it 15 years ago.
But I would like to develop my personal style.
I would like to make street people portraits. The singularity of routine life atracts me.
But I have problems for getting models. About this matter I have some questions:
For making studio portraits, ¿how can I get models?. I imagine it´s neccesary to pay them, ¿how much is one hour?.
I am interested in street social portraits, but I don´t like to use my camera like a submachine gun, I prefer to dialogue with people who I want to photograph. Yesterday, I went out three hours in my city and I didn´t get any people who wanted to be photographed by me.
How do you get people trust?.
Thank you very much.
Best regards.

Hi Manuel,

Could you please tell me how you usually approach people on the street? What do you say to them? I do a lot street photography and my experience has been different from yours. Are you most interested in candids or a portraits in a street setting?

George

Hello Manuel.
I take lots of candid image on streets. If you look at my portfolio, you would see around 80.
In my openion there is 2 ways.
1) to ask the subject if he/she would give you permission, or
2) buy a tele photo lens and stay where you'd like and take picture. There is a problem that your image could be flat.
I am sure there are other ways around but those 2 are working for me.
