About OK, OK, OK, so this is not really a "photograph" per se. I just had to post it to see if there is any interest in what I think is a beautiful image.

This is a particle system build from reading in a color field image - as the particles swirl around they leave trails. The results after about a night of processing is this final image, which in the details produce some really nice flowing lines.

Make with processing.org.

I can use any image and build a flowing particle system around it. I plan to post some experiments using photographs as the basis, but this one was so subtle and beautiful from the mathematics I had to post it.

Please comment away, I'm thinking of pursuing this as an art form seperate from my photography, so ratings will be important before I make a decision.

Let me know your screen rez and I can drop you a copy. I'm also posting more images with some tweaks to the particle movement.

you have created new worlds with colours and probablyly may have explained the euphoria that bubbles in the mind of an inspired artist or even the positive chaos in the soul of the abstract maker. The colours cloud the senses like dropping rainbows in a sea of elusive paints. The design is wonderful but too intangible. I need to catch it to make your abstract ideas more concrete.

The overall geometry reminds me of some wallpapers of Mac OS X, and so I just have to like it ;-)

But the finest filaments, that have some abstract similarity to the texture of feathers in a rich variety of colors, just magnetize my eyes! And it is remarkable that they are very well visible despite the fact that the whole image looks rather soft and without very hard contours!

May I use that as a wallpaper for my Mac, Michael?

Best wishes,

Nick

What a crazy colors ! :)
I wouldn't buy a picture like that but am sure some of my friends would like it.
I hope you don't mind my colors version :)
I actually like the composition. it would look great as a huge printout.

Doyle:

1. You can control the colors - the way I have it set up is to read in a digital image file as the underlying starting point. for this image I used a color field - attached. You can use a photograph as well. Anything will do.

2. Once this thing starts it is beyond your control. For these larger images, I can't even see the image as it grows, I have to save it off in stages to see how it is developing. There is a random component to how this works and there is a sense of discovery as it progresses. Like watching a negative develop in a tray when you have no idea of the chemistry.

3. I'll send you an e-mail describing some of the detail.

AWESOME Michael!! I have been involved with art for more years than I care to mention but I should tell you this is a really pleasant image and one that certainly MUST have an audience waiting for it (IMO). I would dearly love to know how you did this and learn how to do this myself . . . (You can send me details to the e-mail address in my profile if you care to)!

You get an impression of thin fabric flowing in colors and intermingling in ways cloth could not. Can you select colors? I am under the impression that the image is something that cannot be directed or controlled once creation begins . . . but follows to its own logical conclusion.

Lovely image . . . certainly art . . . gotta wonder how you stumbled across this process . . . but who cares? It's a very interesting presentation!

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Kostas:

Let me know if you want the full version with all the detail. You can actually create these images - I can step you through the package and give you the source code. You will need a high end computer to get an image at this scale.

Thanks for the note, it really means a lot. I can also post the image again so non-donors can expand the pano to the full screen.

i think i won't read the technical explanation twice, mr.Kanemoto, but i assure you that i'm going to stare at your image much longer...in my eyes it is wonderful in every respect - photographic and artistic - and i give it the highest rating :)
