Bodhisattva is a person who, motivated by great compassion, has developed a spontaneous wish to attain enlightenment for the sake of all living beings.
Bodhisattva is a sanskrit term meaning ?one who is destined for enlightenment.? The process of enlightenment is an understanding of the way in which the Buddha found the Light, using the intellectual and spiritual faculties, through the operation of which the soul is enabled to break the limitations of intellection. This one is dualistic as it is cognizant of subject and object, but in the Prajna which is exercised "in unison with one-thought-viewing" there is no separation between knower and known -viewing all things "in one thought"-, and enlightenment is the outcome of this (D. T. Suzuki).
The term originally referred to the historical Buddha (563-483 bc), born in Lumbini, Nepal, son of the head of the Sakya warrior caste.
