Grazie del commento Adolfo, provo a rispondere alla tua domanda. Sebbene nessuno sappia esattamente come vengano scelte le foto da mettere in main (il sistema viene tenuto segreto dall'amministratore per evitare i trucchi e gli abusi che avvenivano in passato), credo che si basino sul ratings, sui commenti, sulle visite, sul numero di favorite, ecc., le foto selezionate vengono inserite in un database ed anche quelle più vecchie possono essere nuovamente selezionate. Davvero una bellissima immagine. La gente distrae a mio avviso perché la coppia dietro è scura come la signora ed il cane, in un contesto interamente chiaro. Sono sicuro che se non ci fosse stata sarebbe stato il buio del sottoponte a distrarre. Ma tutto questo non cambia le cose. Complimenti.

A quasi un anno di distanza questa tua foto, bellissima, diventa foto del giorno. La foto e' bellissima con una bellissima prospettiva. Visto che non ne metti di nuove ti commento questa. Che e' un bel vedere. Spero le cose siano regolari.
Bisogna iniziare ad organizzare qualche cosa per la primavera, dai, diamoci una mossa.
Ho commentato prima una foto fatta al famoso campo di concentramento polacco, in questi giorni e' partito da Fossoli, che e' il campo da dove partivano gli internati, un treno che ripercorre quel tragico viaggio, sara' popolato da reduci, studenti e i MCR. Peccato non aver avuto l'opportunita' di andare, Sarebbe stato un viggio molto istruttivo.

Potrebbe essere la foto della settimana, tanto che è bella. L'anziana signora, pare voglia isolarsi da quella gente e starsene tranquilla col suo cane. Una bella immagine che sa raccontare.
Pensavo che la foto fosse recente, quando l'ho vista in home page, invece è dello scorso anno. Essendo sempre giovane del sito, (ma non di età :-(( ) non ho ancora capito perchè l'hanno premiata attualmente. Forse tornano a rivedere le foto "datate"?

I really like the inclusion of the surface that points outward from the left to draw attention to the gorgeous texture of the walkway in general. The whole picture has a motion that is at the speed of the lady and her dog. A very thoughtful composition.

What a lovely composition and mood. This has been uploaded for almost one year with many comments and, although I haven't read them, my instincts tell me there's likely not much left to add. Here is something that might be special...from a distance (looking at thumbnail), the piece of sidewalk on the lower left struck me as if it were the corner of the photo folded over. That isn't a critique...just an observation. So now what is left is to commend and congratulate you for taking over the front page in awards!!!! You have a wonderful portfolio, and it seems fitting that you should be honored in this way. There is one price you might have to pay which is humorous. If you try to return all he resulting comments (and as I see you do this not on your images but instead on others' work only), you will be one busy bee! Happy New Year and sincere best wishes to you. I like this photograph. Yes, it could have been better with only the woman and the dog, but that was not within the photographer's control. What I would like to have seen is a little more of the brighter sidewalk on the bottom left ...a wee bit more just to balance the far greater expanse of the street's darker tone. As it is, it's a little distracting to the flow and emotion of the shot. Still, that's a nitpick. Nice image.

Excellent scene. Is it the dog leading the lady or the other way around? The dog also very much looks like a bit of a Tramp (from Disney's "Lady and the Tramp").
These digital cameras can be annoying, with their almost infinite and uncontrollable DOF.
In one of my photos (http://www.usefilm.com/image/468395.html) of a similar theme, I had a very similar problem, and my solution was to apply Gaussian blurring in different intensities for the different distances of the background. It may be something you can use here, although to be honest, I really am not very distracted by the background.
I think the subject's placement in the frame, the foreground line "pointing" at them and the tonal contrast with the cobbled street really work well to concentrate the eye on the main subject.

I don't know about the people in the background being distracting if you want to clone them out you could but I like to see what the eye sees and I know as well as you when you don't want people there they are there and when you want them there no one is around. Great capture and composition.

Appena postata e gia'questa immagine e'in prima pagina. Complimenti.
Certamente un onore molto meritato e sono d'accordo con te per quato riguarda la contrapposizione vecchia signora/turisti allegri. Comunque in questa foto ci sono molti particolari che la rendono interessante, a parte il fatto che sia bellissima. I turisti non distraggono tanto e quel po'di distrazione e compensato riccamente dalla bellissima struttura della strada, dal triangolo a sinistra e soprattutto dalla signora e il cagnetto. Hai notato che i due hanno un passo sincronizzato? Il cane con la zampa sinistra sollevata da terra sembra che stia ballando e la signora ha la gamba sinistra sollevata da terra; non so se stia ballando dal freddo, ma pare, ad ogni modo che abbia lo sguardo rivolto verso il cane e la combinazione zampa/piede/sguardo suggerisce un' intesa eccezionale. Forse sono un po'strana, ma per me questo e'il particolare piu' affascinante dell'immagine. Che momento perfetto! Mi fa un po' sorridere ma mi stupisce nello stesso tempo. Adesso certo capirai perche' questa foto mi piace un mondo e perche'la metto subito tra le mie favorite.

A me la presenza delle persone piccole piccole in distanza piace molto, aumenta il senso di un lungo, interminabile via vai, del quale la coppietta signora-cagnolino rappresenta uno dei tanti momenti, dei tanti "scalini" di questa eterna scala...
E a Venezia, di scale e scalette, ce ne sono davvero tante...

Ciao MAx! Complimenti per la main... hai messo il soggetto nel maggior punto di forza ed attenzione di un'immagine (regola dei terzi ed in alto a sinistra...) infatti tendiamo a leggere dall'alto a sx... quindi è qui che la ns attenzione si concentra per prima... è interessante sapere che invece in altre posizioni un soggetto deve essere più "interessante" o "forte" per attirare l'attenzione... non che questo non lo sia...per recuperare un po' di dettaglio sarebbe stato utile usare gli istogrammi... i neri dell'abito forse son troppo impastati ed indefiniti... Per la mia 300D... l'obbiettivo in dotazione è tanto morbido... ed ho provato ad usarlo senza premere sullo sharpness interno... sto già pianificando l'acquisto di un lente "seria"... certo è che il 18-55 apre parecchio e sono convinto si tratti di un 18-55 effettivo... a differenza di quel che scrive la stampa... che dice si tratti di un 28-90... ma forse mi sbaglio io... l'immagine non era di qualità eccelsa anche perché era coperto ed ho dovuto lavorare in priorità di tempi (1/60) per recuperare quanto più campo possibile... l'apertura non era tanto stretta lo stesso... di qui la bassa definizione... ma è presto per dare giudizi...Ciao

A mio parere le persone sullo sfondo non disturbano.
Penso che molto probabilmente avrei scattato in verticale (comunque io non faccio testo, perchè non so come mai, ma ultimamente le scatto al 90% in questo modo....).

I like darker photos too, but this time I followed the suggestion that Mirko Saviane gave me in a prevoius comment about balancing of the B/W tones, I think that darkening the image, the woman would have been too black.

No, non penso che distraggano; si inseriscono perfettamente nella composizione di questo bel BN. Ottima l'illuminazione prevalentemente chiara che da risalto alla nonnina col suo cagnetto. Una vera chicca il marciapiede in basso a sx, sia dal punto di vista compositivo sia perchè da il senso delle dimensioni della strada.
Un caro saluto e grazie mille per i tuoi suggerimenti, ero sicuro che, prima o poi, mi avresti "beccato" ma la cosa non può che farmi piacere. E' così che si migliora, no?

Dovrei ricambiare il favore e rispondere con dei versi o con un testo di una canzone, ma mi limiterò solo a dire che è molto molto bella, e ben studiata nella composizione. Io forse l'avrei scattata in verticale, con il soggetto nello stesso angolo in alto, ma con tanto pavimento sotto, punti di vista! It's a great capture, and the composition is excellent. The fact that it's B&W makes it stronger, more artistic. I like it a lot. And I don't think the people in the background are distracting, they add depth to the picture.

Non sono mai stato a Venezia. Piccola parentesi.
Sa figura de sa beccia pivellasa si disegnara a intru su tratteggiu de lineasa in su pavimentu....scusa.
La figura della donna si disegna all'interno del tratteggio di linee del selciato che ne esalta e valorizza la presenza. La gente in secondo piano non mi disturba affatto, la "leggo" come un normale elemento della silenziosa atmosfera dell'insieme. E' tutto in perfetto e suggestivo equilibrio. Anche il bordo triangolare sulla sinistra sembra "agevolare" la tranquilla camminata della signora. Bella da guardare. Inutile farti i complimenti...in italiano.

Eccellente senso nel creare i contesti dove far rivivere ed ambientare i sogetti nei tuoi scatti.Il decentramento della figura principale ne è un esempio.Magari io, avrei aspettato un tantino giusto il tempo di far defluire le persone sullo sfondo che a mio giudizio distraggono lo sguardo dell'orservatore,e poi così facendo si metteva in evidenza suppongo una stupenda architettura di un ponte.Evidentemente,caro Massimo questo sai benissimo che non è un appunto,bensì un mio modo di vedere.Per il resto nell'immagine trasuda tanta di quell'esperienza che ne fanno di te un validissimo fotografo.

It's a beautiful image Max, and almost humurous with the funny dog, the first thing I thought was she was teaching him how to walk properly!! The thing I love the best about this image is all that glorious texture, whether it be the paving stones, or brick/stone walls. It's very effective... stop my heart is pounding, phhaaahh I'm running out breath....

forse senza quella gente in fondo sarebbe stata più "fotografica" da poster, da locandina ... con loro invece è molto viva e reale e, come dici tu, fanno contrastare maggiormente la sua solitaria e calma passeggiata al loro allegro andare.
Bella come sempre è un po' banale ma sincero!

Singolare scatto, Massimo. Il cane ti aveva visto forse ti stava puntando... ;-)
Penso che invece le persone sullo sfondo arricchiscono la composizione, composizione enfatizzata dallo spazio libero dove la signora esprime il suo stato d'animo che hai saputo cogliere.
Se pensi che durante il carnervale quella persona con la busta della spesa che va a casa possa venire multata perché è in divieto per l'unico senso di marcia...

So nice and interesting composition, Max! For me the background people are not distracting at all, I think they suit in so well. I wouldn't know they are tourists if you didn't say. How do you know that by the way? Because they look up? ;-)
The woman seems to talk to her dog... perhaps you are right, that some italian woman talks all the time... hihi.
