About A B&W image shot long ao and almost destroyed by the unfortunate guy who developed it... I think he didn't have the times for this film and used either his intuition or another film's developing data. Anyway, he couldn't have done worst. The contrast is too high to scan or print finely. That [...] destroyed three films from my honeymoon...

I decided to play with it on Photoshop and ended up with this image. I think it became quite original with those unusual colors.

Jose,

Thank you for your comments on my work. The use of large format was dictated by my desire to make platinum prints, ergo, contact printing. My labor of love is to lug the big camera around, for once I have a good negative, the printing is actually not that difficult. But I do curse the camera always...until I get the negatives back.

I have experimented with making postive transparencies of my negatives, and double coat the paper...printing once with the platinum, then using the positive image to print the cyanotype in everything that was white.

Out of 10 good platinum prints, half are lost in doing the second printing. But I do have five or so that I am pleased with.

I do platinum because I am interested in my work lasting potentially hundreds of years. ergo...the native american work and architecture.

Fifty years ago, the great french photographers did not have the government sponsored lighting on buildings that they do today...so my work will always be a little different from earlier photographers. But I also take on the challenge to photograph subjects that have been photographed a billion times, and come away with something unique.

Keep doing your work as you are.....I love your blue lady......it has special qualities. You will need to figure out how to output your work so in 15 or 20 years as your portfolio grows, the prints will still be in good condition. It takes me 10-20 years to finish a portfolio. ie: the native indians.

Look at
www.garyauerbach.com/wwib
It is a book I did in limited numbers but now want the world to be able to see it on the net.
The photos are good, but the words of the indians with no editing are remarkable.

Best to you.....Gary
ps: keep up the good work

An original and well produced piece.. sometimes others mistakes can allow us to profit, it is a shame about the other photos destroyed though. Awesome work!

Hi Jose,
I like the basics too. Guess its the basic that really attracts. Really liked your touch here.
Best wishes, Ahmed

Gary,

WOW!

I've seen reproductions of this kind of prints only on books. But when I had my B&W lab I've read and wondered a lot about it and platinum also, but special chemicals and formulas are quite hard to find here. Maybe I was driven to these tones by my mind, by the memories I've from those times. I wish we lived closer so I could have the priviledge of admiring this technique with someone who certainly'd be proud to talk about it for a few hours.

I really prefer film and intend to use it as long as economics allow me. My digital camera is my film scanner. It captures images that look like film ;-) The best of both worlds.

And now, WOW! WOW!! 8x10 and 11x14!!! I've dreamed a lot about 4x5... These sizes must be amazing. You don't even need an enlarger. Images must be real! I don't even think we have these sizes here in Brazil.

Gary, photographig with these cameras must be an unique experience. Time must pass in a different pace and, by admiring your images, it's always on your side. on the other hand, you must've developed such a relation with it that you can feel when the right moment is approaching.

I plan to acquire a 4x5 in a near future to experience a bit of this experience. You've certainly pushed me a bit more on this way. Thanks for your comment and time watching this image.

Regards from Brazil,

José Azevedo

Hi Ahmed!

Actually it's quite basic - I'm in a basic mood... I even used Photoshop 5 to treat this image...

The image was grayscale, I turned it to RGB. After that, I duplicated layers and played with layer effects until I find it was enough... Too much serendipity, intuition and absolutelly no method, hehehe... Sometimes I like to work this way. Leit it be.

Hope everything's fine on paradise :-)

My best, my friend,

José Azevedo

Jose,

I like it. I have done platinum and cyanotype in combination, giving the similar colors of blue and charcoal. I think it is right with the right kind of image. I used images with water in both of mine....and they worked well. I have some posted here at USEFILM.

Good luck to you, glad to see you might still be using film. I work in 8x10 and 11x14 large format film.

Gary

Hi Rick,

that's one of the benefits of digital. nice to know you enjoyed it. Tomorrow I'll post another version of it I'm working on. Digital manipulation allows us to discover possibilities we never thought of.
By the way, I'm sure you've thought of many, many... Your portfolio is very inspiring, unusual and a pleasure to see. A new truth is out ther ;-)

Regards,

José Azevedo
