I like the black background to bring out the flower and it's color. This is a great shot, good job.

Joel:
I took this photograph in an apartment that is half underground. The sunlight was bright in mid morning - and a shaft of light was making it's way across the floor. I put the potted lilies into the beam and because the sunlight was so strong everything else is a hard black background.
I managed to arrange the flowers so the sunlight made a nice ambient beam right down the throat of the flower and lit it from inside. A bit of white paper was used as a bounce. I have also covered areas with those plastic fruit bags from grocery stores to feather the light and I use my white recycling as bouce cards.

Michael,
beautiful shot! The lighting is, for lack of a better word, perfect. The amount of ambient detail is very remarkable. Brilliant how you're getting back/rim light, and dropping off the stem, so it doesn't upstage the fantastic composition of the flower itself. Single light from above?
Very nice!!! and congrats on the FPD! Very well deserved with this image!
cheers, -Joel

Giuseppe -
Thanks for the compliment, quite a high one after seeing all of your flower work in your portfolio. Think I'll pop in and look across all your shots for inspiration. I'm actually more of a landscape shooter, but really floored that these came out.

Thanks. This weekend brought a lot of rain and snow, so no new photos. Glad to see others agree with your choice as well.

Well, Michael, apparently Jim isn't the only one. The flower is beautifully presented. I love the subtle colors grading into one another. It's a terrific choice to highlight your choice as Photographer of the Day. Congratulations!!! Steve

Splendid. This is the style of capturing floreal subyects that I love: stark contrast, all clear but tone and colours still enough soft an delicate. In My Favorites Image, no doubt. Bravissimo. Cheers.

I think this may very well be the best of the bunch. Beautiful top lighting, composition and detail. A rather timeless shot. The detail in the flower petal and the rim lighting along the stem are great. Your hard work with all the variations paid off.
