About
The Navesink Light Station, also called the Twin Lights, located in the Highlands of NJ, on the way to Sandy Hook.
The first twin lights were built in 1828, with a service structure of about 300 feet in between them. The structure seen here was completed in 1862 after the previous structure fell into disrepair. In 1883 the Twin Lights became the first to burn kerosene instead of whale oil. Later it became the first electrically powered light. The reflection in the night sky could be seen from seventy miles at sea. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1949 and in 1960 it became a State Historic Site.
