About A one hour manually guided photo of the Rho Ophiuchi complex spanning the constellations of Ophiuchus and Scorpius. Rho Ophiuchi is the star in the blue nebulosity with two other stars extremely close to it. The large orange star below and left of center is Antares, the heart of the scorpion. To its right is the globular cluster M4. This is one of the most colorful extended areas of the sky. Due to light pollution this close to New York City, I could not attain the richness of color that can be achieved from more remote areas.

This photo was taken starting at 12:36 AM on the morning of May 20, 2004. Transparency of the sky was very good. Seeing was below average. The temperature during the exposure was from 45 to 43 degrees Fahrenheit. Camera was mounted piggyback on an 8" f/6.3 Meade LX200 Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. The telescope was used for manually guiding with a 12mm MA illuminated reticle eyepiece. This is a crop of the original transparency.

Shane,

Any exposures longer than a few minutes really need good polar alignment to prevent field rotation (stars making arcs around the guide star). The best method for obtaining good polar alignment is the drift method. I usually do this after I do a rough polar alignment with the LX200's alignment routine. I usually shoot for no drift in a 5-minute time frame, which is usually good enough for me to get exposures up to an hour without field rotation. What I still need to do is train my mount's PEC minimize the corrections I need to make when guiding.

This image was shot with a regular telephoto lens with no filters, etc. I have an autoguider, but have had bad luck with it. This isn't due to it by itself, but just other things going wrong while using it, like my battery going from 12 to 10 V in a few minutes (still haven't figured that one out) or the film in my camera not advancing after taking a whole night's worth of photos, enjoying an aurora while the camera wa being autoguided... I may try to use it again after I complete some more wide-field work.

WOW again! My jaw is still on my lap! So do you recomment drift aligning over motorized? Also do you use any filters, field flateners, or focal reducers? Oh 7++++++++++(again)
