Nice, but the text is a bit much and takes away from the real image. Looking around that, this is a very nice image.

Great shot James. While I feel for you, being away from home, you are in an awesome spot for photography. Look forward to more.

Thanks for serving! Be safe.

James,

The overall composition of this shot is very nice and really does not need anything done to it. I was reading your comment about switching to slide film, which I think is a good choice, but you will need to be aware of the lesser latitude of slide film. You will need to decide if you want the highlights exposed or the shadows. A polarizer is also a good idea here as would be a Neutral Density filter to help control the sky highlights.

You might want to test out your lens to find its sweet spot so that you can achieve maxim sharpness out of it. Most consumer zoom are soft at the 300mmm end unless stopped down, try shooting a subject at different apertures then comparing the results to see where your lens comes into it sharpest. Shooting slide film is a good test for this.

Again I really like this shot and you do have an? eye? for this type of work.

Paul,

Thanks for the kind comments. I've actually done a couple of things since this photo was taken. First, I got a circular polarizer. Second, I switched to slide film (Provia and Velvia). I'll have them processed by a pro lab once I get back to the States. I spent 3 days in the Masai Mara and shot more lions and cheetah than I thought possible. With any luck, they'll be much better than what I've posted thusfar.

James, you have a great eye for nature photos. Try using a polarizer filter with color film. Your colors will become more vibrant(especially the sky). Paul

Jay, I think you might want to invest in a Flter it might help to reduce the glare and cut out some of the lighting. It would have helped with the birds. Nice Shot buddy.

Thanks for the comments. I have just purchased a polarizer filter and will be using that on my next trip. As for DOF, to be honest, I was trying for a deep DOF but had my apertureOF relationship all backwards. Like I've said in other posts, I'm new at this and still learning. I'll be going back in December and now that I've got a better understanding of DOF and now that I've got a polarizer we'll see what happens. Thanks again for the constructive comments.

I disagree with the "more DOF" comments... currently they are identifiable enough but don't take attention away from the main subjects.

Great shot, James! Really nice composition - the way the stripes on the zebras blend it almost looks like they are a single animal! The band of flamingoes in the background is a wonderful addition. You don't mention the aperture in this shot, but I think it definitely calls for the smallest you can get away with to get the birds as sharp as possible. The addition of a polarizer might be nice, too - it would help give a little more 'punch' to the pink of the flamingoes and the blue of the water. Again, an excellent photo!

I reckon it is a good pic they are sort of all blending in, in their stripy way..it would of been good if you could of got the birds better maybe the A-dep mode or smaller Fstop..regards Roger
