On dodging the grass on the left; it was lighter but with all that dark area from the trees it attracted too much attention for my taste being all by itself so it's been darkened for this version. Also for those interested the tree on the left is actually 3 trees lined up along the path.(see attached photo from my previous comment which was taken a year ago from the other side of the path) Also, this is just minutes before sunset and as I mentioned earlier, we had one more place to get to before sundown. Have you ever driven in S.F. on a Sunday afternoon during "Fleet Week"??? The traffic was something else!

Thanks again for all the comments & suggestions everyone.

This is a great shot! On the cropping comments...this is a tough call, on one hand the tree being so massive, makes the runner small in comparison which is a wonderful contrast. If the left side was cropped, you lose the width of the tree (you will find yourself "wondering" just how big that tree really is), which would be distracting, mentally. I might have toned the light area that is 1/3 up on the left way down but otherwise it's an excellent capture!

Vlad P.   {K:1477} 10/17/2003
Wonderful image. This magic backlight makes it. I may agree in part with Nicole, the cars here look a little bit distracting and deserve to be cloned out. However, I wouldn't touch the other person, 'cause it's in a good agreement with the title and also add more depth. It seems that original cropping works fine, however I may agree with Roger, dodging the grass on the left would make the image better. Basically, the composition is very appealing and it's pleasant to see it among PODs. Congrats.

This must be one of the finest in your entire gallery. I agree with your instinct to have rays coming from both sides of the tree, but I would have gone in there on the left with a "dodge" tool and brought that small triangle of grass up a little so that is would be more obviously linked with the backlit grass on the right. I was fascinated to hear that with all your preparation and forethought, the critical moment came and went in a flash, and you caught it just right. That's a wonderful combination, just the right balance of perspiration and inspiration.

I like the dramatic lighting in this image. If it were me I think the shot would be stronger if you clone out the other person and cars in background. So that the focus is on the lone runner, the dramatic light, and the negative shape of the tree.

cheers,
nicole

Drama in everyday events..... created by the "magic hour" of light in the early morning... and a talented eye that realized it was magic indeed, and captured it for all to enjoy. Ambient light in all it's faceted glory is one of the most elusive components of film. You not only captured it caressing the trees, but illuminating the runner as well. This photograph is wonderful.... and a pleasure.

Robert Whiteman   {K:2201} 10/15/2003
Kevin, I too was taught to "look around" the subject before firing the shutter. As you could see from this photo, looking wasn't an option at the moment. I was just setting up and beginning to compose the shot with the tree when the runner appeared out of nowhere and I reacted. Lucky I had focused first and had taken a couple of shots to establish exposure levels so I was ready at the moment. There were no other runners before the light was gone and we had one more location to get to before sunset with just minutes to go. Aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrgh.........if only the sun could be stopped for an hour or so!!!
But not to be so we just keep trying.

Thanks for the comments and cropping suggestions. I personally like the "rays" comming from both sides of the tree.

I had planned to be here at this exact time having been there before a year ago to get this one. (see attachment) That was last november so the sun is still too far north (taken this past sunday). If only I could get back next month but looks like we'll be in Hawaii instead. Oh well...

Thanks to all for the comments.

This is a great photo. The lighting is what makes it so great. This is a bit of extra space on the left and such so I cropped the pic down to give you an alternate view of the photo. I just had a slide entered in a competition and one of the comments they gave me was to look around the viewfinder.

Excellent photo. Great eye ..
