Beautiful in it's subtle shades of gray, even more strongly composed, and overall I cannot say enough positive things. Well done, very well done.

Debra, the composition is excellent. i would look at eliminating the texturing. i find it distracting given darkness of the composition. i think a better solution would be a buttery smooth toning and texture. soft and subtle like a baby's skin. hope this helps and i can't wait to see what your solution to this is.

Very interesting diagonal composition, and emotional content.

Very good image however I think there is too much texture! I would smoothe the image a bit and perhaps crop a bit tighter! Portraiture is very difficult and demanding but I really think you have the hang of it! Keep up the good work! Regards!

I agree with the comments on the PS... I think the texture is a bit too much.... The conrast and lighting are wonderful, however. My little nit would be the pacifier... to me it takes away from the otherwise very peaceful scene.

Great contrast! but skip the effects and then you have a first class photo! ;D

The is an incredible image Deb. I love that you took the time to give back to you craft, with you being a photo student, and all. What is more perfect than a parent studing photography. I love the tonal range in this image. I have to agree that the texture is a little much. Would love to see what you do with the image after you finish getting the required help.

I like this image a lot...but I think it could do without the texturing...the dark shirt and the light hands and face and the light of the babies garb followed by the light of the books all make a splendid path...but honestly IMO the texture does distract...it brings out too many light bumps across the entire image...a slight dapple of grain may work for texture but not this one...you have such a good composition I would ask you not to give up on this...perhaps try this with a bit of warm toning or take it to the blue greys...

Deb, I like the composition and I even like the texture.
I think the thing to explore is the color.
Perhaps sepia toning is the right way to go.
Overall this is a beautiful image.

Congrats to Shane!

Deborah (I love viewing your work) I agree to some extent with Dwight in that it does look better with a little more, but perhaps not as much as Dwight suggests. Otherwise, everything is absolutley perfect about this image. Would you be so kind as to provide some background on your experience and influences?

CongratsX2!

I love the lighting in this Debra. It is a wonderful portrait. I kind of like how Dwight cropped it too. Have you tried sepia tonings?

Are you kidding? Give it up? This is stunning! I couldn't tell if you'd taken an old negative and printed it. This is wonderful. The lighting, contrast and texture set a perfect mood. Wonderful job!

Don't give up, I like the image - lighting and atmosphere are very appealing. Particularly the light and expressions on the faces. I think the spines of the books are perhaps a little too modern looking for the rest of the scene which has a more classic look about it. If you can't reshoot, then maybe remove the text. The texture might not complement as much as grain would, at first maybe try softening the texture a little.
