maybe david is right with regards to ersatz emotions, but this is a general problem of all portrait photography.
also with your pics, david: I fear it consists in a general way of showing emotions the more pathetic the better (after a century of mass media) and both photographer and model unsconsiously respond to this general norm.
even people on the street behave like actors, once a camera is aiming to their nose
:)
I alway considered it much more unfortunate the showing of some 'typical face' or some unfortunate exotic beggar to pose in this freak show called photo-journalism.
and with regards to technical skills: nothing superficial here, beware!!

?The power of the human soul comes through superabundantly in this photograph!? (Paul C.) We must be living on different planets, Paul. Is it a sign of our times that so many people respond to ersatz emotion? To me this image is a mixture of contrived emotion and superficial style. It doesn?t even possess the virtue of originality. You would think there was more than enough truth to be captured in the real, everyday world without having to drag some unfortunate into a studio and and get him to pose like a deranged imp out of ?Lord of the Rings?. I admire the technical expertise: if only it was put to better use.
