Hi David - yep, you're right, this was more about my Papa - but I really do appreciate your advice. Thanks so much for taking the time to pass on your knowledge - much needed since I have so much to learn! I'm not big on portraits but I'll try this out in future. I hope you're well. (and I'm also just catching up hence the delayed response!) Kind regards, Jo :)

hi Jo, this picture is about the person not the picture so please don't think it bad taste if I comment on the picture.......you want to keep the background sharp to add something to the shot so F8 and smaller (aperture) will do that but if you want to emphasise the person then F4 and larger will do that very well, even f2.8 if you have it, if you shoot a portrait close up at f1.4 you will have the point of the nose in sharp focus and the rest starts to blurr which is actually quite effective if you don't like the sharp, 'in your face' kinda' portrait......life's blurred.....wonderful picture of your Papa. best regards, david.

Thank you so for your comment Abhi. Yes, he was a very relaxed and happy 93 year old grandad -we had much fun! He was fit as a fiddle and champion of his bowling club too! :) I wish such health and happiness for you too! :) Kind regards, Jo
