take a peace of mat silver or white board and cut it small enough to hid behind the bottles and kick light back through...just look at any beer ad and you will see this..i had a chance to work 4 busch beer some time ago and the art director taught me alot..also if you do a pour..leave the mug in place with the reflector behind it and use a hose to drain the beer each time..also you have to " season " the glass first with beer so that when you do the pour the 2nd time the head will not be to big..as a clean glass will give you to much head on the first pour...I've taught myself from things like this also by ripping out a ad that i like and duplicating it...just to learn how to light ect..but keep up the good work..Terry....

I personally actually like the blue tiles, I think a plain black background would have been very typical, almost predictably so. The blue tiles really compliment the green bottles well and I think they also help in highliting the condensation on them, thus making me crave for a bottle of Heiniken right now. The only thing is that I would have cropped off the small arcs right at the bottom of the picture, I find them slightly distracting. Alright...gotta go grab a cold one...

The setting here is a hot tub or pool, right? I'm guessing from the tile... looks like standard pool tile. It might have added to the picture to have (if the setting allowed it) people, out of focus in the background, sitting in a hot tub with mugs of beer off to the side. Might have added that little bit more atmosphere.

its impossible to tell here but the whole bottle is in focus from front to rear. i shot it at f/32. i had a white reflecter bounging light back into the bottle on the right side but doesnt show well here due to the computer screen only allowing like a 1:4 - 1:5 ratio. yeah i consider it a failure for the most part because i didnt have a glass mug. it was kind of a real quick thing so i blew it off kind of wish i didnt now. as far as the colors i like the blue tile it gives it a setting feel plus there compliment each other. thanx for the comments.

I agree with Maggies comments, and would add that , for a pack shot, you really need to be HYPER selective with the bottles. It looks like the label of the left bottle is squint or the ground is not flat. Either way, as a Brand Manager, I would not choose this photo because of it.

I also feel that the black background is an opportunity missed for communicating an atmosphere for the brand.
Personally, I use two types of pack shots - The 1st - Just the bottle, and absolutely NOTHING ELSE, taken head on lense at the height of the centre of the main label. This is for placing on posters, billboards etc. The definition, clarity and colours need to be absolutely PERFECT. No defaults are acepted.
The second type are what I call "ambiance" photos - this is the bottle put in a setting. The angle taken can be more varied, with close ups on the label etc. The atmpsphere HAS to be desirable for the targetted consumer. This is where the marketeer communicates the brand territory and created a DESIRE for the product. Personally, I dont "feel" the ambiance you wanted.

Just my honest opinion, but I hope it helps,
Halid

Hi Jason *smile* you have very good exposure on the front label which is a must have when you are doing commercial shots. You need a little more DOF to sharpen up the label on the neck of the bottle.

I dont really care for the blue part at the bottom of the image. Would rather it be black continuous from front to back. Glass placed on top of black material of some kind would give you a reflection for a different look.

Also the right sides of your bottle lack definition and blend into the background. You need to get an edge light on them by using a reflector to the back on the right side to bounce some light onto that side.

Hope you will try this again... maybe even add in a glass with the beer in it. Pour it at the last minute so you have a head on it....good luck...hope to see more...*smile* ...Maggie
