About if one looks closely at this, one can see the affect the warmer winters are having on some of the trees. The reddish/brown patches seen below and to the left of the central peak are suffering from bugs causing them to die. Apparently, it's not getting cold enough to kill them off in the winters anymore, hence wide tracts of bush through much of BC are now dying and will be possible tinder for summer forest fires...

I never get tired of mountain images Gary. A very informative about too. My son had never seen the mountains in BC before, so when he was in Vancouver at the end of November, his GF and he took a side trip to Whistler. Unfortunately they had to drive up during the huge snow storm and had no idea what the place looked like until they woke up the next morning. They had a great view on the way back though. :)

We still, untill today' light sprinkling have no snow in Toronto. Very unusual.

Hi Gary and Happy New Year from Toronto where I reside now. Awesome mountainscape, great warm lighting and subtle colors. Unfortunately the forest damage doesn't look good. I thought the storm in Stanley Park in BC was severe, but this kind of damage is seldom talked about. In the end some forest fires will kill some of the bugs & disease, but that's only partial and unwelcome and it takes time to grow new trees.

Dramatic landscape, Gary! If it weren't for the little bit of light, I'd have thought Gods were angry!

Gradients are a kind of layer mask. In PS, on the bottom of the layer window , you will find some "buttons" : create new layer, delete layer, layer mask, ect. Select add layer mask (which is also found on layer menu) a list of layer masks appears -- choose gradient. On the gradient dialog there is a drop down list of all sorts of gradient, find one you like. The gradient dialog dialog also provides control of the shape, position and size of the gradient. I suggest that you put the new layer mask in overlay (or softlight) @ 50% to get a reasonable look at it while you play around with its controls. You can always go back an change the gradient by double clicking the icon in the layers palette and you can delete the layer. PS has all kinds of goodies that need to be explored. I spent one whole month in PS CS2 learning only curves -- I did not make any adjustments besides curves.

Hi Frank... wow, thanks for the detailed comment. hmmm, not really sure how to do most of what you suggest here. Could you explain the basics of this "gray gradient" overlay? I'm rather green wrt post processing techniques (currently using PS v6.0) Thanks. Gary

Very stunning mtn. scape. If this were mine, I would crop the trees on the right and bottom; apply some curve work to get some contrast in the mtn. trees, especially on the right and knock down the highlights from the snow on peaks; lastly a gray gradient on the sky overlay blended @ about 40% to get more drama from the clouds.
