About Local satellite expert Kevin Fetter alerted my astronomy club that the International Space Station (ISS) would be passing very close to the Moon on May 1st 2006. I rushed to assemble my gear and I started snapping several short exposures at the predicted time. As luck would have it, the ISS passed directly in front of the Moon! It looked like a bright star-like object (the ISS was far... hundreds of km's away from me to be exact and quite low in the western sky). The whole event lasted just a second or two. I digitally combined all the pictures to show the ISS as a single long streak. The earthshine (dark area of the moon that is visible due to illumination from earth) was quite prominent.

This was my first attempt taking an astrophoto with my new Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 lens.

This is the only instance I've ever had to capture a spacecraft crossing a distant celestial object.

Hope you enjoyed!

Thanks Gerhard! This sure was a challenging shot to take and an opportunity that doesn't happen all too often. The Moon was already quite low in the sky too. The result turned out better than I expected... especially on my first try.

Great Capture! This Picture enters my "Hall of Fame of non-professional night-sky photos". Often I spend my time doing the same stuff with a friend of mine - boring our wifes. But I have never captured the moon and the ISS in one pic. Great. Nice Regards, Gerhard

A fantastic capture, Pierre! I'm glad you were able to show us this scene, with your very well done PP work to show the ISS's path. Great work!
Dave.
