Taken at Tiananmen Square, Beijing last Summer. I had read something about the Tiananmen Square massacre a few days ago and made a mental note to post this.

This is a wonderful composition - and the scowling guard is hilarious! There's perhaps a quality issue though - is it a little oversharpened or cropped from a larger image? I'm not sure, but love it anyway!

Hi Jinggoy,

The approach you describe sounds very familiar to me - I just shoot what I like to shoot, and I think keeping the versatile element only prevents falling back into a routine, if you know what I mean. There's plenty of time to specialise, and your strenght will surface sooner or later. IMO, specialising only narrows your vision and creativity. There are quite a few topics in the forum addressing this; you might want to keep your eye out for when the next one comes by (tried to find a specific thread, but couldn't find it; guess we'll have to wait till the forum search funciton is re-installed....)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Hugo,
Thanks again for the comments! I guess, I'm not sure if I should really concentrate on a particular theme. I see people here in UF who are experts in nature phography, landscape, abstracts, portraits... Each one has his/her own expertise and excel very much at it.

For me, I shoot whatever catches my eye and I'm trying to learn as much from others who are experts in that field. I'm also considering taking up photo classes to improve my "vision".

I guess, if I may ask a Pro, what would you recommend to one starting out in photography? Should I concentrate on one theme and improve my skill for that or just try to shoot any subject out there?

Hi Jinggoy,

A simple, but very well balanced composition. I guess I wouldn't have seen this one coming after the dragon fly - but that's also what I like in your portfolio: it's very versatile, and shows some very creative and well thought through photos. Quite impressive!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Karina, Thanks for the comments. I'm here in the US and only get to read what everyone sees on the paper. I was reminded of this because of the recent anniversary of that event in Tiananmen. I did live in the Philippines before the US, where we've had a similar "authoritarian" type rule. But there is that feeling of helplessness if you're part of the masses unable to do anything.
Here in the US it's a little different where media prevents abuse- of course it still happens. And a large middle class is the best cure against it.

I didn't mean to start a political discussion on this, just sharing my thoughts and why I posted this.....

Good and well composed tele lens shot (avoiding tourists).
'about': The responsibility of most massacres lies with the so called democratic states Jinggoy. Don't know where you live (and what propaganda you get to hear), but unfortunately it isn't that black and white...
Good photo though ;-)

Thanks Meigy, the guard wasn't at all happy I took this shot
and it didn't look like he wasn't going to chase me. So here it is!
Take care!

Hello Jonathan, Thanks for the comment! China in the public eye is very different right now. Very democratic and modern - Shanghai, Beijing all the big cities, you would think it's wasn't a communist country, but it still is!

Jinggoy,...there's a perfect story behind this picture.
Good job, perfect angle!

Stunning shot. Perfect composition and balance, as well as subject. The dominance of Mao's face tells about the crushing influence of the state over the individual.
