A symbol of how much prematures/babies depend on adults and a proof of huge medical progress. A truly touching image ...

I agree that this is one of the most touching photos ever and it is of LIFE magazine quality. Hope that she grows up strong and healthy. It's amazing what science and technology can do!

I am new to uf and new to photography, but my eyes have seen and my fingers have touched hands as tiny as hers more times than i thought my heart could take. I cant tell you in words how deeply this photo has touched me. you have truley captured a poetic moment in time through the lense of your camera.

Wonderful, as a preemie myself and one of the few to live from the 1940's I
was really taken by this image.

I think you already read this "hundred" times... but I have to say it too: very emotional and touching photo. Amazing, how fragile we can be...
It's amasing that the girl survived and is healthy too, at 5 and half months born...

Thanks for all of your kind words. My head is growing larger by the moment.

What do you think: Black and white, or color?

Sorry. My first sentence wasn't being critical; I thought this was a new entry. It IS a wonderfully telling shot, and I was voting for an award. It's marvelous!

What does it take to qualify as an EC? I'm crying as I look at this picture. It is such an emotionally-charged image, showing so little but telling so very much.

I have come back to this image at least 20 times and it is a really hard one to comment on. I've been in a couple neonatal wards due to having a couple doctors in the family and also some volunteer work as a youth in the hospitals. I think you captured the childs incredibly small size quite well. I like that you captured the translucency of her skin and the general pinkness that is always overwhelming. The feeling I get from this is hope rather than one of pity, which I think is very important. I think you did a great job with this image.

This is either one of the best photos for family life and scale OR THE best photoshop job ever! Great job with what had to be a emotional time. Sometimes we as photographers over look the simple in attempting to get THE image. You have captured THE image with the simple!

Phil, Truly a moving photo. As a father my heart goes out to the parents, the desire to protect something so small is so great. Please let the parents know I will keep them and their new daughter in my thoughts and prayers. I wish her health and strength.

I suppose I should explain a little more about this. I am a military photojournalist at a hospital. This was taken earlier this week. The baby is currently the 5th tiniest baby born alive on record. I did take a few other pictures that were a little more intrusive (with the permission of the parents), but most of them are hard to look at. This was one from the series that captured the most emotion without generating pity.

Bingo! Beautiful. Kids never understand the scale when you tell them later. This explains it perfectly.

As a father, this is the kind of picture that grabs my heart. Nice job at getting intimate without getting intrusive.

This is truly moving and amazing. How did you come to be there? I hope the baby is now happy and healthy.
