Thanks for your comments and the encouragement John. I'm finding it hard to motivate myself to go out and shoot (especially when it's SO cold!), but this website helps with that a lot. You're my friend now too. :-)

Hi Nicole. This has worked well for the given subject. Making it B&W adds to it. My only critique is that it could have been a bit sharper. John

Salut Nicole...

Hi Nicole,
as you should know... I love Weston so I couldn't be captured by this title.
Unfortunatly Weston was used to work in large format and the tonal range , contrast and detail was completely different
I bought a 4x5" "thanks" to his images
Anyway,... how do you develope the T-Max?
Is it a T-Max100 or T-Max400? from the grain I see it could be a 400.

What I could suggest (if you really think to Edward Weston) is to use the 100asa and eventually add on a yellow filter and evetually also a circular polarizer. Close your aperture to f22 (tripod is mandatory!) and leave it open for the time you need.
Remember that if longer than 1 second you need to compensate with a longer exposure (reciprocity failure,.... look at the Kodak charts).
If you are also "able" to wake up at the dawn... better and better, light is magic at that early hours (Kenna docet).

Hope these suggestion can be useful because your composition is great and what you need is only a better control of the tonal range (at least using all the potentiality of your 35mm).

Last but not least, Kodak T-Max is wonderful with the T-Max developer but it work also very well in Rodinal 1+50 (but expose it at 80asa)

Bye and happy new year

Hi Nicole,
I've seen your post in the forum...
This image could be a nice idea but I don't like the focus. This image should keep more details of the wood and probably also the details of the hook... technically using a closer aperture.
With your choice you have now a grey flat wood without the mini contrast I would like to see (but it's my personal opinion).
Same for the hook that's not well defined. I would like to see a strong sharpness around it.
Bye

Giuliano

Splendid lighting on this one! It goes a long way toward reinforcing the lines of your subject and helping to lead the eye up the neck.

Centered text...centered subject removes any hope of dynamics in the shot, making it all so static.

Ahhh...We have Monet's original in The McNay Art Museum here. I can see the similarity, but the camera needs to be more level, and less downward.

Wow, some strong words taken in the context of being undressed. I think the message could be stronger if you gently fade the lettering and warp it to align with her skin...as if a tattoo.

Hi Nicole, I read your post in the forum, and I do see what you mean. I, personally, don't think there's anything wrong with an inconsistency in style, nor with a versatile number of subjects in photos.

In general lines, i'd say there is a strong consistency in your work; the tones and atmosphere (somewhat gloomy, in most cases with a tungsten warmth over it (especially the portraits) and a very consistent approach to composition (not surprising with your background)

I'd say your style evolves about mood and atmosphere. The bourbon series is a very strong example of that. It shows a perfect combination of photographic techniques to sketch the style, both in subject as well as in mood.

A few others, on the other hand, miss that genuinity, and seem to be more "forced" if you know what I mean. Why don't you draw up a list of what feelings / atmospheres you're most comfortable in, and complete that list with technical background on how to sketch that mood and capture it on film. With that cool, analytical approach as a draft in the back of your mind, I think you can really make things rock. the benefit is that you start shooting with a a concept of what the final shots should look like in mind; For me, it brings back that sparkle we're all missing at times. Hope this makes sense...

I picked this one my favourite, as I find the approach to the subject truely fascinating Higly creative and effective. Inspiring too. Compared to your other photos, I do think it stands out, and very positively so.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Nicole, I like the point of view of the camera and the shadowed lines, which accentuate the essence of the guitar. In your bio you note that you live on the north shore of Lake Tahoe and that it is one of the most beautiful spots on earth. Please post photos of some of it so we can all enjoy! Thanks very much for the kind comments on my porfolio.
