That is true. Impartiality, a list of aesthetic criteria, a little bit of subjectivity, and visual appeal should be it.

Hi Mark,
I think one of the things that the Usefilm administrators have to watch out for is that the awards don't get served like a popularity contest. If they are not awarded by some kind of separate panel, it might only naturally come down to how many friends you have here and how much time you have to spend on the site.

Andre, that's why I think everyone should come in with the mindset that it's not for awards, but to share. If the staff awards you, that to me is a big deal, and I'm very thankful for the recognition. I was thinking of the possibility of creating an award button that anybody can press to give a photographer an award. In a way, that exists already, in the form of "add to favorites."

Mark,
There are so many really good photos that go up every day here. It's imposible to give everyone awards. I can only remember one instance where someone got an award for one of their photos that was not really one of their best. Generally I think the staff does a good job of distributing them. There are as you say, many people here who are fantastic photographers. But, some of them don't put in any effort to promote their images at all. I know promoting is frowned on and this might be valiant on their part, but what happens in this case is their images get about 25 views and a couple of comments and quickly get lost in the fast moving wave of new images. This is everyone's loss.

I was very surprised when it got the SC. There are so many deserving photographers here in UF who have yet to be awarded.

Congrats on your Staff Choice for this one Mark. I think Sepia and B&W florals all look great. You never know how they are going to be viewed though. Some get passed right by with only a few view and others become a big hit.
This one is very deserving of the award and views!

Thank you, Melanie. Yeah, a little sadness, especially when I think of all its siblings that didn't get to see spring time except for this one. I'm so glad you like it.

Great photo .. the technical perspective makes the shot of this sunflower just fit .. the black to bright circles of vignetting + the hidden sun behind the flower .. perfectly composed for this kind of camera !

Hi Mark,

well, I really love both the picture and the about. I'm fascinated what these toy cams do with their users. Not only do they see the world through a different lens, they gonna mod that thing! Saturday, I trapped myself buying some stuff to mod the body with strips! =)

like that out of focus-focus here. very distinct and special perspective.

hi mark,

1080 views, okay there must be something special ;-)

to be honest: this is some of the coolest pictures here at usefilm. it breathes understatement with every pixel. the tonal range together with the shadows really make this image. and we have a cat, definitely a good argument to make an image a winner. So I probably didn't say too much new stuff here, just: yes, this is awesome good stuff.

best wishes,

thilo
