sean, this is outrageous! still trying to wrap my mind around the concept of boogieboarding a 10-12' shore break in a foot of water. these kids today have no fear ;^) great shot!

btw, i can't see grant's attachment but i can tell you that your photo looks fine to me. the only blown highlight i see is a small patch directly in front of the surfer (right where he is looking). wish grant's attachment was still there so i could give you a better description.

take care,
tom

jurgen, you gotta love the desert. when you least expect it, it presents you with breathtaking sights, big contrasts and beautiful colors. i dig this a lot. although i partially agree with john. the stones are ok but the sign needs to go. then again, there is the quandary: nature gives us what it gives us and we have to make do. should you clone it out? probably not, imo. i like it much better as-is.

tom

bob, nice sunset. love those low puffy clouds. good job getting the sun behind them. i particularly like the drilling platform (is that what it is?) nice touch. good job!

patrick, hands down the best photo i have ever seen of the racetrack. not only is the composition outstanding, but you caught these rocks after travelling in the "wrong" direction. very unusual. they usually travel towards the grandstand (the black rock in the background). keep 'em coming!

hugo, unbelievable clarity. it feels like the day i got my glasses for the first time. zero noise. beautiful towns make for beautiful compositions, no? but the best part is the combination of fireworks and traffic lights. very cool!

and a happy new year to you,
tom

bobby, good to see you are having fun with that fisheye ;^) i got me the 10.5mm last fall but havent found the right spot. you seem to have a knack for it. excellent perspective. i don't know what this memorial looks like to mere mortals but you made it look great. as a thumbnail i thought it would be the inside surface of a cupola or some such structure. very well done!

don, very interesting composition. without your "about" i would still be scratching my head ;^) it's almost as if this is a technical drawing for a machine for which only that one pulley was ever completed. very cool and very intriguing. great job!

dark, ominous and yet hopeful. seems that the only escape is by catching a cloud and riding it away. did you use a polarizer? only thing that bugs me a bit is the tilt (or is this on a slope?). regardless, this is great shot, pat.

pat, interesting how your prarie ghosts keep calling me. every time i look at your profile i find myself clicking on these first. i live in semi-rural virginia (right on the edge of civilisation) and i get to see many of these. always wanted to shoot a few but every time i drive by one either the light is all wrong or i'm in a hurry. perhaps this what attracts me to these photos. although, it's not quite just that. your "treatment" is outstanding. most significant for me is the 3D effect amplified by that eerie, dark soft-focus you put on the surroundings. excellent shot!

michael, if i didn't know better i'd think this was southern arizona. very sonoran desert looking. i like your timing here. leaving the valley in shadow and highlighting the hills in the background. these moments are fleeting. esp. when you're trying to set up a shot. 10-15 minutes either way (+/-) would've been a totally different photo. well done!

btw, what is that in the center of the frame? a junkyard or a parking lot? oh boy, now i sound like the prototypical dumb tourist ;^)

ursula, thank you, so much! i see you went back-and-forth a bit with it ;^) glad to see that it got you thinking and that you took the time to compare and comment. on all of them no less....

i think that's what happened to your other comment. it's under one of the other versions ;^)

TM!! good to see you around. hope the new year see's you well. i've been busy with the xmas thing and on vacation so i haven't been on for a while. i'm a bit embarassed... i haven't gotten to the photo shop yet ;^) i "need" to go badly as it's time to renew my passport. i know i said this before but i'll be headed there later this week. i'll let you know when it's on it's way. which reminds me: you moved, didn't you? email me your new addy so it doesn't end up in the wrong place.

as to this photo: thanks! glad you dig it. exactly the sort of insight we were looking for. it is an interesting experiment. i like seeing what the different opinions and points of view are. interesting how everyone looks at them differently. i myself like different things about all 3. it wasn't until i saw all 3 side-by-side that i realized that the real photo lies somewhere in between. kinda neat, dontcha think?

take care,
TR

ps - still working on the beta band. it's growing on me but in small doses. reminds me of my experience with soundgarden. that took a year before it kicked in good for me ;^)

patrick, of course i don't mind. thank you for taking the time. this is precisely what i was looking for. i do like what you've done although it is hard to measure on the smaller attachment. looks like a contrast adjustment in the foreground and a darkening of the sky? i'm curious what steps you took...

btw, i agree with you. i like different bits of each. i think i might have to combine them for a future upload ;^)

gregory, this is almost like a flashback! looks like you and i stood in almost the exact same spot to shoot this. i think i was a step further back and shot it at 12mm but it is almost the same composition. pretty amazing. some shots just beg to be taken... if you like, you can compare them here http://www.usefilm.com/image/536510.html

verena, after reading the first line in your "about", i would say "out". mostly because it's an abstract (with or without the top right corner) but it would make a better abstract if that part was cropped. i think the lines would flow better undisturbed.

however, after reading the whole "about" i now have perspective and better appreciation as to what this is. given the nature of the subject i would say "in" to maintain a connection with the subject. however, that connection is only available to the viewer if the image is always accompanied by your text.

aside from that, a wonderful composition. i only wish the sky matched the color of it's reflection. but that is an exposure problem in a tough lighting situation. probably not doable in the field (esp. with a digital camera) not much you can do other than fake it in PS. very nice photo. i like it a lot!

pat, this is truly outstanding! excellent work. i'm not sure what you did exactly but it looks 3D. the house definitely pops off the background. it seems to be in sharper focus than the immediate surroundings. you also seem to have "extracted" the patina of the house and applied it to the photo as a whole. very cool. my compliments!

tom

ben, interesting. must've been the 4th. i shot the morning of the 5th and stopped when it started to dump snow at altitude. we shot from the west side road where it crosses the salt pan. i guess you must've been at the devil's golf course. strange how you can be a few miles apart and then run into each other's photos on the internet :^)

ben, excellent shot of this very difficult subject! what an awesome sky the valley blessed you with on this day. was it shot recently? i was just there in early december but got a completely cloudless day along with a stormy, overcast second day. all i managed to get was the very beginnings of sunrise. oh well, another excuse to go back again ;^)

i like your choice of b&w here. it makes the scene awash with detail. i assume you shot this at 18mm because of the immense dof you got out of f/16. although jose has a point in that there is no obvious foreground to hold the attention, you have managed to do that (for me) in a very subtle way. the difference in light (caused by cloud shadows, i assume) brightness halfway to the mountains does the trick just fine. well done!

tom

jennifer, i'm siting here trying to explain how this makes me feel. there is an immediate emotional response but it's hard to describe in words. sad yet hopeful? melancholy? not sure it's either but somewhere in between. this feeling is driven in large part by the silhoutted flowers in the fore. sitting and watching. waiting for the hand of god to find and touch them. excellent choice for b&w, btw. i'm not sure i would get the same response from a color photograph. very well done!

tom
