I love the tilt of the head and the almost-serious expression betrayed by the toungue :-)

Hello Kamran,

Beautiful image - the umbrella shape and the colors! And you also captured that special meloncholy feeling as the summer comes to an end at a resort.

Hello Gene,

You have done a great service to the country's most visually underrated state!

Wonderful image - your eye for composition, color, and your patience really paid off.

Great, Rob. This is my favorite so far of your automobile close-ups. I love the repeated round shapes of the fender and the lamp, as well as the "negative space" formed by the grill against the curve of the fender.

What did you use as the light source? It really looks magical!

Hi Jim,

Actually, I liked the way the wires curved and had the early-morning light reflecting from them. I meant to use them as part of the composition :-)

A beautiful lanscape image, Rob!

I love the way you captured the three pelicans "peeling off" in formation near top center.

Pismo Beach is about the most beautiful place I've ever seen. Haven't been there in 11 years - thanks for the wonderful reminder.

Hi Brad,

Very nice composition and tonality. I like the way you used the receding streetlamps to form a diagonal pattern, which is echoed by the way the roofline of the old building in the mid-ground steps downward along an almost parallel diagonal. This in turn created the triangular slice of the newer building in the background. Although the windows of that building lie along a rectangular grid, there is still the "diagnonality" created by the hypotenuse of that triangle.

The blacks in the streetlamps are beautiful.

Finally, there is that little "Bird" penant hanging from one of the lamposts to hint to us that we're in Baltimore. Great!

Thanks for your very kind comments on my recent photos. The $20 bill I promised you is on the way :-)

Best regards,
SteveR

Hi Gayle,
I like the way you really "worked" this subject, trying out different techniques. The composition is great, with the contrast of the stucco texture and the smooth window frame and glass. I like all 3 versions, but this one is my favorite. It's the large expanse of neutral wall and black frame with the realtively small area of hot red, orange and yellow inside the frame that especially appeals to me.

Best regards,
SteveR

Hello Sai,

Yes, I can imagine - being Jewish myself, the first time I heard about this Hasidic Reggae singer, the combination struck me as so odd, my first reaction was to laugh. But he is the real thing - a great entertainer with a great message. Eclectic is the word, indeed - fusing the best of several cultures.

Hello Kamran,

First of all, thank you for your kind, enthusiastic, and useful comments on my photos. I'm always happy to hear from you!

This is a wonderfully expressive image. Each person seems lost in his own thoughts, and although crowded together on the same bench in the carriage, somehow isolated from each other.

It must be a universal human behavior on metro systems. I have seen the same while using the New York City, Washington DC, and Baltimore systems. In fact, I will be riding the Baltimore metro today, and your photo has reminded me to pay attention to the people on the train.

You have joined the Pantheon of My Heroes of Subway Photography! Have you seen Dave Beckerman's website? http://davebeckerman.com Dave is a NYC photographer who also has a gift for capturing compelling tableaux while riding the subway. I think you would enjoy seeing is photos.

Hi Todd,

Thanks to you and to the others for your kind comments and suggestions. I agree with you and Kostas about cropping the top of the window frame. Here is how I interpreted your suggestion - what do you think? In case it's not what you meant, feel free to take virtual scissors in hand and post your own version :-)

It's a wonderful portrait, Samuel!

I like the way you framed the little guy with the branches, and then added the photoshop frame as well. In this case, it works well. The contolled, shallow depth of field you used makes the bold blue of his outfit really jump out.

My babies are now 22 and 18, but I still have fond memories of when they were "binkie"-age, and every time I see a child with a binkie, it brings back such good recollections.

Best regards,
SteveR

Hi Gene,

I agree with Laura - great use of bright colors and selective DOF to bring them out.

I also like the message of your photo. It's true. When I lived and worked in Manhattan in the late 70's, I would walk to work and hear conversations in several different on the way to the office. Then I would get in the elevator (a beautiful 50-story Art-Deco tower in midtown) and hear a few more languages on the way up the the 14th floor.

In my own group little in the office, we had wonderful people from Greece, Columbia, Puerto Rico, Roumania, Italy, Argentina, and Guatemala (at least - this is just what I can remember from 20+ years ago.) -- and the best thing is that they were all Americans, too! They had all become citizens, or were in the process of achieving citizenship, bringing all of the best parts of their backgrounds and cultures with them as their contribution to life in NYC.

Best regards,
SteveR

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your kind comment - yes, it *is* a beautiful area here (only about 35 minutes from Columbia.) We moved here because of a job relocation, and I resented it for more than a dozen years. I didn't see the beauty at all. It was my "born-again-photographer" experience that opened it all up to me.

So here are two itenerary items for your next trip here: (1) spend some time in Chesapeake Bay Country with your Usefilm buddies (I bet Dan knows some more beautiful places elsewhere in the county) and (2) come with me on a day trip to NYC (all other Usefilmers invited!)

Best regards,
SteveR

Great lighting that shows off the texture of the walls. I like the way that you built the image around the compositional element of the sort of Z-shape made by the stairs and the two landings.

Hi Ari,

Your photo has a wonderful feel to it - the way you caught the girl, her body position - it's as if she is ready to plunge through the hole of the "donut" like Alice in Wonderland.

Nice composition, great "decisive moment" and wonderful humor as well - bravo!

Dan,

Three beautiful ladies, and you show them at their best. I do like the creative blur a lot. I'll have to pick your brain next time we meet.

And to the bride - may she always be as happy as you show her here!

SteveR
