Thank you for your comments. To answer your questions:
I was approx. 10-15' from the gulls. The gulls were feeding during the annual herring run, there were around 20 birds feeding, so the difficult part was trying to figure out which bird to focus on.

A nice photo, the muted colors and lighting all work nicely. However, IMO if you cropped to the right it would improve the overall composition.
