yeah, baby! definitely one of the very few good reasons to get up early. i think this is the best one of the group. love the color gradients with that big ol' sun peeking through the branches.

paul, i always liked this statue. very strong emotional response. you have isolated it very well. but, as you said above, the kicker is the color. love the way the low sunlight nrings out the bronze and it's subtle nuances. i also dig the frame you chose. gives it that letterbox "private ryan" feel to it. i shot some statues at the fdr memorial that day also but i'm not entirely sure if they are postable. need to work on the color as they came out very green. anyhow, excellent work!

hugo, i was afraid that the ghost wouldn't be enough since it is a bit hard to see. i tried to bring him up a bit but failed miserably. that is way beyond my level of skill with ps. so i decided to post it as-is ootb. there'll always be a next time ;^)

paul, we probably walked right past each other at some point ;^) i think this happens more often than we think. maybe we should make usefilm hats or some such so we can spot each other out there.

see my comment to todd miller (above) regarding the top left. i don't much like it either but it was hard to reframe it and keep the fountain intact. i guess i'll have to reshoot this one at night. it's a different photo but it should look very nice.

as to the tripod: i'm lazy too ;^) but i learned early on that you always need it when you don't have it. i also have a bad caffeine habit and my hands tend to shake. mostly when i think about it, which is when i really need them to be steady ;^) so i "always" carry a tripod and my bag full of accutrements that i might possibly need. hardly ever need them but they do come in handy. for example: what are the chances that i would've needed a 3 stop ND filter? almost nill. and yet, i found a use for it.

tom

todd, thanks! glad you dig it. i thought the same about the "ghost". the upper left corner is very harsh, i admit. i don't much like it either. but, cropping it would chop off the tops of the fountain in parts. actually, it results in a much more abstract composition. what do you think?

take care,
tom

PS - posting again is great, btw. it's just hard to get back on comment mode. god, this is hard ;^)

thanks, michael. actually it's true. bright (direct) light tends to make waterfalls shimmer and reflect pretty badly making a proper exposure very hard. this was shot late in the day (notice the off color of the trees in the upper left) and the fountain was completely in shadow.

stefan, ah! i see what you mean by intermediate. actually, i have to admit this was an accident. i was trying to work out the "right" shutter speed in order to get the water to look just so. this child walked on and off the frame during the exposure. the accident is really the only reason i decided to post this one. but, your comment gives me a few ideas to try. probably in a situation where there is no running water.

hugo, thanks! i always appreciate your comments. however, this comment makes me think that you may not have seen the "ghost". i thought it alone created enough tension. perhaps if it was more visible? ;^)

mark, this is gorgeous! i esp. like your perspective. tough angle... hope you didn't hurt your neck taking it ;^) the wildflowers definitely make this one. good choice too in centering the castle as it works very well in this perspective.

beautiful shot, don! makes me want to be there. it is a bit disorienting, tho. the road seems flat and level enough but the horizon makes me wonder how tilted the road really is. curious what it would look like with a level horizon...

todd, once again, your masterful use of dead space is captivating. i would've probably centered it more and cropped it in a panoramic frame. producing a totally different effect. this is much better.... you win! bonus for the negative/IR look. love the tonal gradiation as it gives the shot a very calming effect. my only nitpick is a technical one: the shot is very slightly tilted to the right. probably not enough for most to notice, i'm just hypersensitive to it. i even yell at the tv when they slip and tilt a shot ;^)

jim, this came out great! did you give it a color boost or is this as-is? mine came out a bit darker and gloomier so i'll have to work on them. btw, i really like this angle. you nailed that log in just the right place. it gets lost in the rocks on my shots. anyhow, had a great time yesterday meeting you and steve. hope we can do it again.

michael, what's up? i go away for a little while and come back to find a different person. just kidding. but your latest stuff is a bit of a departure from what i'd seen before from you. i like it! i first thought this was a thread reel until i read your about: and looked closer. i like the amount of dof you used. although i would've tried placing it in the middle so as to fade in and out of it, i think i like it more this way.

how strange... i wrote my comment before reading the others and i was shocked to find that you aren't happy with it. i see what you mean about it being a DOF issue. the grass is not quite as defined as the bird making the bird appear as if it where on another plane and closer to the viewer.

btw, i think this what makes it. it's like something out of the matrix. surreal and somehow out of place but you just can't put your finger on it. i still think it rocks.

pat, i appologize in advance for the coming cliche, but... wow! the panomaric format very effectively conveys not only the direction but the speed of the bird. the blur also helps this. btw, is it gaussian? motion? both? beautiful bird too. this photo really makes me want to be there. the only choice then would be: nikon? benelli? nikon? benelli? ;^) a truly great photograph. excellent job!

don, you gotta love the desert in full bloom. i like that you chose this hillside showing the saguaros growing in the background. i've always liked these views of them (and joshua trees as they grow in similar patterns). this is one of the things that struck me the most when i first visited a desert. those cowboy movies really had my perception quite skewed.

todd, believe it or not, i've only been to SD once before. given that, you could check out:
- the point loma lighthouse (can be very cool on a clear day with nice clouds)
- old town and the gaslight district
- the zoo and animal park

however, if you are willing to drive a few hours, anza-borrego state park is very nice if you're into the desert thing. kinda like a mini-death valley with several slot canyons. also, given all the rain socal got this winter, the wildflowers are really popping out there. the wildflowers should be going until about april or even maybe may. when are you going?

mr. t, very good, very strong, very disorienting. it messed with my spatial awareness and it took me a few minutes but i eventually figured it out. you have a knack for these truly outstanding compositions without an obvious subject of interest. somehow the whole image is the "obvious subject of interest". way to break the most basic of "rules" and get away with it.

more!

excellent shot, cessy! love your re-interpretation of a fairly cliche composition. the IR really enhances the surreal mood. the required long-exposure and your color treatment makes this look like a painted scene. oddly it feels alive, moving, flowing... would it have anything to do with the figure up on on the rocks? very clever, very subtle. i like it alot! reminds me of early disney; particularly fantasia.

keep these coming. your IR experiments have inspired me to give it a try. my original attempts at IR where done in the desert and needless to say, they turned out pretty uninteresting. i now know that what i need is trees! thanks...

damn, mr. t! excellent work. i couldn't figure this one out until sally pointed out what it was. and now, seeing the original, i'm even more impressed. i was thinking of titanium objects but couldn't really come up with one. i figured it must be a car part i'd never seen or some-such. good job beating it into submission with PS ;^) a lot of other folks would've played with it until it was merely "whacky". yours is simply and literally, something else.

chris, outstanding! the valley blessed you with an incredible view. although, i find it interesting that the silt looks like salt because of the blue cast. i'm curious what it would look like if you could've corrected the blue cast and darkened the sky a little bit. other than that, and if i forget what i know about the place, an excellent composition. love the sharp contrast between the grandstand and the mountains behind. and that moon is the kicker. well done!
