Thanks very much, James. Actually, it sounds more complicated than it is.

I think the core of this technique is to make a duplicate of the background layer and run a High Pass Filter on the copy layer (Filters>Other>High Pass). I set this to about 30 px. Then set the layer Blending Mode to Hardlight. That's done before converting the image to B&W. Same thing with the dodging and burning.

The results really depend on the original image and in this case, a low-key image works best.

Thanks again James! ~ Warmest regards, Rocky

Oh my! Thank you so much Lynn! I am so appreciative of your words (more than you know). It is so nice to be acknowledged by one's peers. Thank you for taking the time to look at my work and comment. I did this image in color too but I think the B&W is more compelling. I think that there's something about stripping the color away that removes all the distractions allowing the viewer to see the forms and lighting in a completely different (and honest) way. Thanks again Lynn. ~ Warmest regards, Rocky

Thanks so much Gayle. It was a good suggestion to get rid of the framing. Sometimes I'm trying a new technique but it doesn't go with the image. Thanks for giving me the great feedback. I really appreciate it. ~ Warmest regards to you, Rocky

These guys are real characters. Lots of personality. Darwin (here) in particular is a goof-ball. He loves to hang upside down and laugh.
Yes, they are insanely noisy. We built a separate room for them that has double walls (I'm not kidding either). They can scream all they want now without disturbing the neighbors (or ME). It used to be impossible to concentrate with that screaming. But it's just 'what they do' in the wild. I think we measured their screams at 120 decibels. Pretty loud. Since we built the room, life with them is much more enjoyable. Enormous HUGS to you missy! ~R

LOL! Love the enthusiasm! I am grinning NOW for sure. Anything exciting happen while I was gone?
It's gonna take me a few days to process everything I learned but it's so great to get back to my computer. I was chomping at the bit to try the techniques I was learning. Thankfully, they give you this giant book that contains all the notes from each class (even the ones I didn't take) so, I can review easily.
Enthusiastic HUGS! ~R

Thanks very much, Ron. This time of year we get these wonderful skies due to the monsoons. The problem is simply where to point your camera. This was at "magic hour" just as the sun was setting from my front yard. Thanks again for the kind words and for taking a peek at my work. ~ Warm regards, Rocky

Okay, I just HAVE to add this to my favorites. This literally takes my breath away! What an incredible shot. The post-processing makes it look almost like a Norman Rockwell painting. You, my friend, are one incredible artist! ~ Warmest regards, Rocky

Love this background texture. The B&W conversion is compelling. All the comments about this looking like a painting are true. But it looks like MORE than a painting as well. Once again the expression is priceless and the composition exquisite! A very compelling image Benedetto! You are a master! ~ Warmest regards, Rocky

I'm just amazed that this didn't immediately get an award of some kind. I truly LOVE your post-processing on your images. I'd love to know how you get that painted look and textured background. You are one of the best fine art photographers I've seen. The captures are just amazing. Great composition. Always a great expression and there is always a feeling of an underlying story behind the image. This is great work. ~ Warmest regards, Rocky
