And now to Brian. Brian, dear, composition is nothing but a tool. The centered composition means stability. This guy is backstage, he just holds the stage door, nothing happens here, opposite to the constant fuss on stage.

Interesting...but honestly...plain...centered? Nice lights tho...beyond the gate.

Thanks again, Maxim!

Unfortunately I have no personal experience or impression about Petersburg or "the Empire", but I think I got Your point at last.

BTW the second image below is a completely different one, and not bad at all. It suggests that there is something very strong and hard to handle behind that door... Great capture!

Best regards,
Gabor

Dear Gabor!
Most probably this is not my best, after all I upload my pictures not
because I need this ephemerous "Internet fame" and all these stupid points.
I need ppl's reaction on my pictures, just to see what an average internet
user likes or not. As for the composition - you are absolutely correct, but in
this particular case I did not want any dynamics. For me Mariinsky is
Petersburg (where I was born and lived till my immigration to Israel 15
years ago) and Petersburg is Empire. Empire is static and heavy. No
dynamics.
Keep in touch, I'd love to see more of your works.

PS. Just to show you one of numerous variations see the attached file

Dear Maxim,

I just reviewed Your portfolio, and I'm impessed. Unfortunately this one is not Your best, for me at least.
Of course there is not any rule that does not allow You to compose this picture this way, but it lacks dynamics. I like that the man in the center looks to the right, towards the colored lights. A little more space there and a bit less on the right could do the job.

(if You reply here, I'm notified immediately, so no need to use my pics for messaging)

Excellent journalistic (opportunistic?) shot. A chance well seized. Is the yellow cast true to life? My temptation would have been to reduce it, at least until the skin tones on the reigious Jew were natural. I like the fact that both heads are turned in the same direction. It give a helpful sense of unity to the picture.

What a great shot. I love the contrast between the pleased expression on the womans face handling her little camera and the "serious" photographer behind her with his behemoth of a lens. Really good capture.
