Hi Claudia,

great composition and color, but it's underexposed. The cam's exposure meter got fooled by the white wall and thought, it would be middle gray (18%) ... you would get a similar effect, when shooting in snow.
But it can be easily corrected, if you shot RAW or in Photoshop, as Paulo already demonstrated.

Thanks Claudia!

You like IR and have a D30? Well, then it's time to order a Hoya R72 IR filter ;-)
But maybe the Cokin 007 is a better alternative, cause you can use that filter with all your lenses, you only need the adapter for each lens.

Thanks Peter,

yes, you're right ... the lighting wasn't optimal. Thank god, this location isn't far away, so I have a chance for a second try ;-)

Hi again Peter,

I think then it's time to try your 300D for IR ;-)
Or did you already?

Hi Peter,

nice especially with the ducks, but I miss more depth of field, sorry f2.0 was too wide open for this scene.

Hi Shkelzen,

if there wouldn't be the focus issue, I would call this art.

Hi Robert,

great scenery and depth, but it seems a bit right tilted because of the horizontal lines.

Thanks Margaret,

I'm not absolutely satisfied with the colors ... I would prefer a bit less magenta in the plants, a more blueish tone. Maybe next time ;-)

who says winter isn't an IR season? ;-)
Did you already try it with your 300D?

Thanks Zeev and Peter!

@Peter: Thanks for the tip ... I already tried everything to de-noise while avoiding to loose detail ... the upload limit is too small for high quality IRs.

Hi Zeev,

great image ... I like the composition and colors. Which ISO setting did you use? It seems you had to fight with noise.
Mmh ... I think the Cokin filter might be a nice alternative to my Hoya R72.

though I'm not absolutely satisfied ... only the front is really sharp ... I forgot to switch off the IS :-( Hope to be more successful next time in September.

great ... IR beyond the usual landscapes.
I would have zoomed in a bit more on the lady ... otherwise very nice!

Hi Claudio,

yes, both of the "blueish" images are nice. The false color scheme of VIALE INNEVATO is geat. The scheme of PARCO EUR comes close to my IR CHANNEL SHIFT style, which I created by chance in early 2001 ... I took an IR image with custom white balance and exchanged the blue and the red channel against each other. The idea resulted from the discovery, that these are the channels that mainly capture IR ... and nearly identical amounts.

Hi Claudio,

nice, but I don't like these extreme IR magenta casts, most digicam's auto white balance produce.
That's why I always use custom white balance in IR, which would look similar to this ;-)

Hi again Claudio,

now I know, why you have problems. I know a german female, who uses the 828 and she was heavily cursing, because it is very difficult to get custom white balance to work correctly in IR.
She told me, that the custom WB works nice in usual color photography, but when she tries it with the R72 screwed on, it doesn't work right.
I gave her the tip to try RAW. I always shoot with auto WB in RAW format and set the custom white point, while converting to TIFF ... so far I didn't get a response, if this is possible with the 828's RAW image converter software.
I hope this is the solution to this problem.

Happy Testing

Thanks Claudio!

To achive similar results, it is very important to use custom white balance. The source image should look like my "The Styx" or "Holiday on Mars", which you'll find in my portfolio, too. I'll drop you a mail to further discuss this, because I'll need info about your cam and filter to help you.

Hi Lori,

you can use the same filter on the G2 too and get similar results, but the shutter times will become longer and the G2 tends to produce a soft center spot in IR, which is brighter than the edges ... but this could be corrected in Photoshop.
Search the Canon forum at www.dpreview.com to find further info about this ... search for "G2" and "R72" and/or "IR".

Hi Lori,

I don't know how they are called in English, but I know this most beautiful southamerican parakeet race ... this one is definitly one of the most beautiful I ever saw of them.

Hi Jenni,

nice Nymph Parakeet, nice portrait, but the white balance is way off ... I bet, you shot it under tungsten lighting, didn't you? Wasn't that a white wall in the background. Auto white balance doesn't handle such lighting conditions very well, especially if you combine tungsten with flash. I would recommend using the RAW file format, cause then you can correct such problems nicely afterwards to get the colors right.
