klaas, wow! the simplest subjects sometimes make the best subjects ;^) the shallow dof you chose makes this look detached and otherworldly. i feel like i'm on another planet. the strip of sky is an excellent touch which adds to overall mood. wonderful photo!

take care,
tom

kimmy, beautiful and melancholic. great composition and tonal range. i'd love to see the top of the tree but that's really just a very minor nitpick. excellent shot!

fern, beautiful composition! love the perspective and esp. the shadows on the rock. they add texture and depth to the image. very well done!

kenneth, what an amazing view! the reflection on the pool makes it look like molten rock. very nice composition. beautiful photo!

phil, not just a long day but apparently a very good day as well. no better way to celebrate an all day drunk than at the pub ;^) thanks for the memories!

roby, wow! excellent sky. perfect title. it has the fluid look of a roaring fire. actually, the more i look at it, the more i question whether these are truly clouds. mother nature is constantly providing us with amazing displays and you captured this one beautifully!

ventrix, excellent reflections! i particularly like the continuity of reflections in the small rectangular pool in the middle-foreground. in combination with the distorted, almost fisheye-like reflection of the larger oval pool make for a very interesting composition. very well seen. great shot!

john, this is extremely interesting. the contrast between what appears to be a dry or drying lakebed in the foreground against the lush hills in the background is very unusual. combined with the rising mist and the curving, meandering stream of water it creates a very surreal landscape. it wasn't until i read your "about:" that i realized what i was seeing. a tidal basin! the realization changed my perception of the image instantly.

great light. perfect exposure. excellent composition. also dig the "letterbox" presentation as it adds to the mystery of the image. 7+favorite.

tom

stan, i think you pulled it off. even more so after i read how you did it. i originally thought it was shot from a platform. knowing that it was taken from another train makes this even more impressive. great job nabbing this one! good exposure. straight lines. amazingly steady esp. at 1/60. i dig it! well done.

peter, excellent composition! this photo would probably work without the machinery in the foreground with the lush green lawn speckled with leaves offsetting the overcast sky. however, the rusty machine puts it in another dimension. the greenish color on the lower parts make it appear as if it grew there. a permanent part of the landscape. wonderful photo!

stefan, thanks! btw, your photo is very familiar to me and made me smile when i saw it. i've been coming to badwater for a few years now and it looks like your photo most of the time. this is a tough place to shoot. i had the image in my head of what i wanted but the conditions were never right. i lucked out this time (after a dozen or so trips). even so, i wanted a more dynamic sky so i guess i'll still be going back looking for the shot. it never ends... ;^)

btw, the stones in the pool are actually lumps of salt that over time grow out of the water.

tom

michael, partnership is definitely a good thing ;^) actually, i'm not sure if UF strips the color profile from uploads or not. i'm not sure how they could. however, this file is right on the edge size-wise and just adding the profile or even a frame would've put it over the edge. i didn't want to compromise quality so i decided against it. thanks again for all your help.

peter, thanks! glad you like it! it was a bit difficult, actually ;^) mostly because it was shot blind. set the exposure and focus manually and then set the camera on the ground (dry mud). i've determined that next time i get the chance to shoot this i'll probably lay down on the ground and actually look through the viewfinder ;^)

tim, yes!! wonderful patterns and textures. dig the composition. even the arcing horizon. i always liked that look but some folks seem to be picky about it. feels like i'm seeing the curvature of the earth. very cool! although not necessary here, i think you could've gotten away with a saturation bump too. excellent shot!

michael, gorgeous view! is this near big sur or closer to SF? beautiful colors and contrasts. i feel inexplicably attracted to the grown sand. so many patterns and tones interrupted by the foam rivulet (sp?) and the edge of the water. golden grass fading into lush green cliffs accentuated by low clouds that appear to shoot up and out over the ocean. it's a bit grainy but it works here. i've been along parts of this coast and the wind is usually pretty intense. the grain gives me that feel of wind in your face as you gaze at the landscape. truly magnificent. only nitpick, which howie already picked up on, is the horizon tilt.

hi jim. well, i can't be PC. ;^) my vote goes for the nikon! although the pro1 shot is wonderful. very crisp and all that. the color range here is fantastic! kudos! to this day i'm extremely impressed with what the d70 and d100 can do outta the box. excellent shot!

hugo, i dig it. not as much as the first one, but you don't get to see this perspective very often. i like the dof you used. well, moreso the idea you were pursuing. the blur on it's torso is a bit unsettling but maybe that's just me. i don't much "like" spiders either ;^) as to the crop, i think it's great as is. i think it would be a bit unbalanced if you dropped him even lower.

michael, by no means did i imply that you should remove them from the photo. i agree with your "light touch" philosophy. i was simply saying that i think (some) NP's are a bit overcrowded. i think this diminishes their raw beauty and the experience as a whole. however, as you stated, they are there for all of us and any restrictions will probably simply succeed in negating the experience for most of us. i was just wishing ;^)

stefan, very cool! i love when those shoot & pray photos come out. love the mood created by the slight blur and grain. i also like the composition. looking at the band through a tangle of wires and mic stands gives me a feeling of place. dig all the shadows too, btw. very cool shot!

michael, beautiful colors! great exposure. very nice interpretation. i dig your composition but i see how a fisheye would definitely make this one a completely different shot. reminds me why i lug one around everywhere i go. not very useful most of the time but you never know when it'll come in handy.

michael, i hate to repeat what everyone else has said but the sky really pops on this one. great job with the depth and texture on the clouds! excellent color and sharpness all the way around. i just wish the tourists weren't there ;^) nothing you (or any of us) can do about that though. but it shows one of the things that bugs me about the national park experience. way too many folks. many of which are disrespectful to these national treasures. that's besides the point... excellent shot!

hugo, finally! a subject i understand ;^) beautiful detail in both the spider and the web. i suspect it's a result of the flash power and positioning. i also like the perspective you chose in combination with the shallow dof. maintaining the web visible as well as excellent detail on the critter itself. also, the setting sun breaks up the background very nicely. kudos on catching this without the web moving on you, btw. i like this one very much. and with your propensity to post the best one last, i can't wait to see it.

thanks hugo. i told you i would post it ;^) actually, i made no change to this other than the crop to make the tracks appear from the bottom of the frame. i also cropped the darker side of the mountains on the right. this could possibly make it appear to have a different level of luminosity. less mountain and less playa with more sky probably makes for a brighter shot that accentuates the color in the mountains. just guessing.

the experiment is something we have discussed in the past so i'm sure you know what it is ;^)

teunis, very nice 'shrooms. i really like how they seem to be wet. love the composition although i think maybe a bit less dof would help them stand out more from the trees in the background. i also see something odd here that i can't quite figure out. there is a bit of digital noise in the top left corner. however, it seems to be restricted to the green background. a result of resizing, perhaps?
