Hi Dave,
I believe it is the Tiaga variant, but I would have to check my books to confirm (they are out in the car). Red-tailed Hawk plumage is so varied that I don't always check for variants (perhaps I should). I can tell you that this a mature male. I have been watching him and his mate raise one young chick since mid April. Stay tuned for posts of the baby.

Great title, Todd. As I'm sure you know, this is a young red tail. Would this be considered the Harlan variant? Or, do I have my labels mixed up....

Ken,
All I can say is thank God they're vegetarians.
Thanks for all the kind words. BTW your capture of the gull with the Avocets in pursuit is OUTSTANDING.

Excellent capture Todd, I have not seen a red-tail impale it catch this way before, he must have learned it from a neighbor Shrike. Well done.

Great job Todd - these guys are fairly common around here, but so hard to capture - It seems they prefer the native power pole as favorite roosting posts, which makes for poor subject angles!! You got a great shot of her! Well done! Kerry
