Dave – I like the juxtaposition of foreground symmetry over the misty New York skyline in the background. Also, given your reflective mood as stated in your comments, I really like the black and white treatment.

Great image, well seen, nice write-up . . .

Dave -- What a great candid shot. I think the extreme contrast really makes this image pop. This is a great concept shot. For what it's worth, like Roger, I recognize that hand position too . . .

Regards,
-Mike.

p.s. I love your profile picture! It made me laugh out loud. It's another good concept image!

Danny -- This is a very interesting image and use of tone as a compositional element. Well seen and well done! Reminds me of a fine art print.

Fred -- My favorite of the batch! Your composition in this image makes it easy to attribute emotion to this young kit. He appears timid and shy. He looks like he wants to come out and play, but will take a moment to warm to the idea. His eyes suggest he's like the timid hound who is just waiting for the invitation to romp!

Nice use of vignetting to center the viewer's attention on the fox.

Great capture,
-Mike.

The title, alone, is worth a thousand words on this one! Made me laugh out loud. Then I popped the thumbnail for a closer look . . .

Great job in cropping out all evidence of the exhibit, too. Well exposed and presented!

Brings back memories of vacation near-mishaps . . .

Buckle Up!

Darlene -- Did you pose that bird? What a great capture! I thought I liked your previous posting of this bird! This time, in addition to the great light-on-dark contrast you managed to present in your last image, you've given us a nice reflection and a little touch of green. I really like the branch (grass?) hanging from his beak. Kudos on this capture!

I am curious, though, how much coxing did it take to get the bird to pose like that? Great work!

Best regards,
-Mike.

Graceful! Nice timing. I think the white bird against that dark background really makes this image shine (excuse the pun). Good work!

Wow! Very nice. What a great composition and capture of a very moody scene. The near monochromatic tone gives in an old-time, almost dreamy feel. Good stuff.

Nicely composed. Great B&W conversion, very crisp and not muddy at all -- good tonality, too. A great portfolio piece.

Great Shot!

I got so caught up in the story aspect of your picture, I totally forgot to critique it!

I love the classic 2/3rds view of his face. It really works well in this image and contributes, exceptionally, to the storytelling aspect of the image – given the near-perfect physical attributes of your model to pull this image off.

The darkened background, with minimal detail visible, really adds to the overall strength of presentation. There is nothing to take the viewers interest away from the subject, yet enough visual texture back there to add significant interest, suggesting a sense of place: dark interior of the subject’s cabin home.

The window lighting theme strengthens the sense of place created in the background.

Sorry if my exuberance is out of control, but (damn!) I like this image! Again, good luck to you in the competition.

Would you mind if I were to put a link to this page on my blog and write a short entry about this image? I’ve sent you an email @nebraskavisions w/my blog address so you can judge it’s content for yourself before you respond back.

Cheers,
-Mike.

Title? How about: Iron Will . . .

The weary determination I see in this man's face suggests a life of struggle just to stay in the game. His wardrobe appears new. This suggests he may be doing better than even. His firm grip on the iron barrel of his rifle suggests he is the navigator of his fate. He is what he is by his sheer force of will.

Incredible image! Very expressive. A whole story in just one picture. Surely worth a thousand words. Good luck in the competition. Please let us know how your image fares.

Cheers,
-Mike.

Very nicely done! No doubt hanging on a wall in the subject's home . . . Wardrobe, pose, vignetting at the corners, and lighting treatment all work well together in this classic character portrait.

He seems to be gazing off into some distant time. Very effective pose.

Cheers,
-Mike.

Rob -- Nice feel of depth to the image. The heavy shawdows really played to your advantage, and you used them well in your composition. The dark, brooding sky is a nice bonus, too. I see an unusually bright sparkle just inside the shawdow line as it angles away from the 1st mitten. Not sure that it looks like a dead pixel, but it is slightly distracting. May consider cloning over it.

Great image!
Cheers,
-Mike.

Michele -- Great colors and contrasts of textures in this image. As presented here, it's a wonderful capture of a wonderful memory. With just a little cropping (Jason's comment & representment w/crop), it becomes a powerful story telling image. Good work!

Ade -- You've made nice use of those trees on the left to eliminate unneeded detail and drive our eyes into the reflections in the water. Also, I like how the trees' reflections on the far bank lift our gaze toward the sky. As usual, a nice, moody sky. Well done.

Cheers,
-Mike.

Hugo -- Great colors! Love the simplicity of composition, too. The mist really works well here, both as a compositional element and as a visual simplifier. Great work, and nice site at awesome-earth.

Marc -- Nice balance to this image, both in division by the reflection line and in tonal mirroring. I especially like the way the mist against the far end of the lake plays into the composition, softening that transitional zone between real and reflected. Great image! Nice work!

Marc -- Great capture! The thing I like best about this one is the energy conveyed by the waves jetting straight up as they break against those rocks. Great choice of shutter speed. As usual in your images, all compositional elements are well worked: the gentle C curve, the contrast of dark-to-light focusing your eye on the water jets, and the total absence of unnecessary elements. Two thumbs up, and glad to see your work posted here. It is most inspiring (and thanks, again, for adding technical notes on the making!).

Cheers,
-Mike.

Reminds me of the Eastern sections of Capitol Reef National Monument in Southern Utah, except Oregon's painted hills seem more photogenic . . . It's a very dramatic sky, with colors to rival the hills beneath. Great work!

Wonderful detail on this magnificent bird! I like the bold contrast of colors, too: the warm, crisp coloring of the bird against the cool blue hues of the background. You can just feel the intensity of this bird's soul revealed through its sharp, searching eye. Well done!

Marc -- Great capture! You can just see the joy and delight of discovery dancing in her young eyes. Love the shallow depth-of-field. Using it, you've managed to place emphasis on the emotion of the moment. Great work and I'm looking forward to seeing more of your recent images posted here.

Love that dark, moody sky! How long do you work a subject like this? I too often experience a magic moment shortly after I have put the camera away. Has experience taught you to better anticipate when/where the magic will be happening?
