Centering is fine for a picture like this... only suggestion, use fill flash next time to define the harshness of the shadows.

Eric:
I masked on the vertical using the gradient tool in stripes (reflected) gradient, and then worked the levels in strips by the depth of field.

Eric:
Good shot, centered on the composition, and good contrast - looks like you could go for a pure white in some areas, but overall a really nice photograph. Looks like the matte finish added a bit of a grainly look to the photo, which is odd, because the effect is almost like a storm situation...
I like the sky, I do have to say the horizion is maybe not level, but does add to the drama. Very good - next opportunity try a rule of thirds or fouths composition maybe?
I just ran into a problem with corrupt files, and was happy that I shot so much that one turned out OK and I was able to post it...

Welcome Eric. It's not like it lacks tonal range is it? I have been told scanning from negatives can require finishing to fix that issue. Slip it in photo help category and I always get help. Lots of people generous with their time here if you ask. sadly I have the time but no expertise.

No, part of the problem was that the print was on Matte finish paper. The uneveness of the paper messes with this scanner. It make it look like there is a lot of dust on the photo, which is not the case. I think I just need to play with it. Thanks for your comments!

I'm "okay" with the trunks. There was much more detail in the original. They were also less washed out. I really need to learn how to use my scanner. Or become Photoshop profissiant. But, if you have some photo tips about the trunks, then I'm all ears!

Crisp shot -
Only suggestion is that the sky got a bit overexposed to a pure white.
If you are after stressing the regularity of form - you could accentuate the geometry by taking the shot straigt up so that there is little to no perspective.
Or, you could tilt the camera clockwise and shoot at more of a slant if you want to accentuate the perspective.

Crisp image with the dog, nice and close and can make out individual hairs. Bit of a blast of light from the flash, though.
You may want to put the dog looking out of a large window and try the same shot with some nice ambient outdoor light coming in.

Good start, welcome to usefilm.
Your camera has great saturation, and good contrast and brightness in the photo. So the mechanics are pretty sound.
Maybe next time, think of the rule of thirds for an asymmetric composition, and duck a little lower to the ground for a different view.
